The lowdown: Released as the final single from New Kids' third album, Step by Step, this midtempo torch song became their first major misfire. Reaching only #53 on the Billboard Hot 100, it snapped a streak of nine consecutive top-ten singles and spelled the beginning of the end for the group's pop dominance.
The vote: ATRL was clearly not feeling the NKOTB ballads. Though the first few voters gave "Let's Try It Again" decent scores, it slid further and further down the list as balloting went on.
Best bit: The fact that it was not titled "Let's Try It (Again)" (or is that the worst bit?).
The lowdown: Inspired by the biblical story of Exodus, this gospel song was one of two singles from the Prince of Egypt soundtrack (though it was greatly overshadowed by Mariah and Whitney's Oscar-winning collaboration "When You Believe"). Illustrating the group's precipitous decline from its boffo heights just a few years earlier, it remains Boyz II Men's last top-forty hit on the Hot 100.
The vote: Though Changes may be the only one among us who truly loves late '90s soundtrack ballads, "I Will Get There" is the first song not to receive any 1's.
Best bit: The gorgeously harmonious a cappella opening.
