A centerpiece of her concept album I Remember Yesterday [you won't see another single from this album for a very long time], Love's Unkind combined girl group sounds of the 60s with present day disco to tell the story of a girl with an unrequited crush; a proto-You Belong with Me if you will. The most dazzling thing about this song is Donna's vocal performance, and it's a true example of her role as pop music's greatest interpreter of lyric. She fully inhabits the idea of a jealous, lovestruck girl in the first voice and uses a deeper part of her chest voice in the second to depict and examine the girl's "growth." Really dazzling and underrated stuff. One of her biggest British hits.

Oh dear lord, WHAT happened tonight? I was the high score on, like, half these songs.

I mean, I get why people might not appreciate some of them (though, whether you like it or not, "Love is in Control" IS that ****). But "The Woman in Me"? "There Goes My Baby"? "Love's Unkind"? "Love's About to Change My Heart"?! HOW are these songs already out? That's just wrong.

I am NOT a happy camper right now. And I can already tell I'm going to find this top ten very disappointing.
