It depends on the person. A Black person is any person of African descent from anywhere around the world. There are 'Black' people in South America, the Caribbean, Africa (of course), Europe, etc..... 'African American' is specific to Black people with roots in the United States.

Let's say someone is a Black person born and raised in Jamaica. They are Black, but not African-American. The proper term for them would be Afro-Jamaican or just Jamaican.

It's actually quite simple. I don't see what's so offensive about being called Black when you are Black either, so.....

See, but how are we suppose to know that? So I guess at the end of the day, saying "black" is easier. It's just like describing an asian person. You're not going to say "The Korean guy", "The Chinese guy" because some people can't tell, so it's just easier to use "asian"

It is easier. That's what I'm saying. 'Black' is an all encompassing word. African American is specific.

This whole thread is about race. "Black" refers to race, not culture. "African American" refers to race, not culture. "White" refers to race, not culture. "Caucasian" refers tor race, not culture. "Asian", when referring to people, refers to race, not culture.

This thread is all about terms used to describe someone's race, not someone's culture.

You just don't get it. "African" is not a race. , It's a geographic region, a continent...not a race.

And that is exactly why it sounds foolish to refer to someone as African American in any attempt to identify them as a person, since

1. African is not a race, I repeat.

And 2, There's no other basis for usage of the term, such as (pan African) culture.

Calling someone African American isn't calling them African. It refers to an American whose ancestors are from Africa.

African and African American ARE NOT the same thing. In fact they are very different.

If you want to get technical about it, they are 'European Americans'. It's not a common term, but it's accurate.
