Roxanne Clifford joins Joseph Mount on this bouncy pop tune off of Metronomy's excellent 2011 album The English Rivera. The song tells the story of an on-again-off-again couples who has finally cut the ******** and have finally fallen in love again, with Clifford singing the line "Love / I'm in love again" in the perfect monotone. It's the happiest pop music got in 2011.
6. Fleet Foxes "The Shrine / An Argument"
Helplessness Blues was already better than their self-titled debut before I got to this track, which is tucked towards the back half of the disc. Yet this song is without a doubt the best thing Fleet Foxes has ever recorded. Robin Pecknold's vocals are more aggressive, more urgent , more powerful than ever when he signs "Sun light over me no matter what I do." It's a song in three parts, building up to a rollicking middle section, only to drift toward the third section, full of beautiful instrumentations and Fleet Foxes' standard gorgeous vocal harmonies. It was hard to imagine Fleet Foxes outdoing their self-titled debut this time around, but they more than succeeded at that. Now it seems hard to imagine them outdoing this song, this album. Time will tell.

Kanye West has always been one of the biggest pop stars in the rap universe ever since he burst on the scene with "Through The Wire" way back in 2004. In 2011, he's teaming up with Jay-Z, and Watch The Throne was the result. No one knew really what to expect from the collaboration, yet they somehow defied expectations still. On "*****s In Paris", the fifth best song of 2011, Production is shared by Yeezy and Hit-Boy and the two bounce so many ideas off each other in the course of 3:30 that in other less capable hands it would be way overwhelming. Not the case here, as Jay and Ye cleverly sample audio from the Will Ferrell comedy Blades Of Glory, as well as an incredible dubstep inspired breakdown, where Jay-Z and Kanye West give us all a fair warning: "Don't let me get in my zone."
4. Lana Del Rey "Video Games"
Who exactly is Lana Del Rey? Is she an A&R guy's science experiment, is she the next Lady GaGa? Amy Winehouse? Adele? How about none of the above. While everyone is quick to label the next female star as a greater version of an artist in the past, it's a lot more challenging to admit when someone comes along who is totally unlike anyone else at the time. On "Video Games", LDR beautifully equates a relationship full of obstacles and complications to someone playing a video game. The old school, Nancy Sinatra-esque vocals and production add a layer of mystery to the singer, as did the homemade music video for the song. The sky is the limit for Lizzy Grant, let's just all hope she doesn't burn out getting close to the sun.
3. M83 "Midnight City"
Anthony Gonzalez is the mastermind behind M83, and "Midnight City" might just be his best song ever recorded. The song features the greatest synth hook in 2011, It's the perfect song for those late night drives, and every time you hear the song, it has that crazy way of making you feel like you are on top of the world. Spread your arms wide and soak in the city at midnight. It doesn't get much more breathtaking.
