Last time I checked out of Michael, madonna and whitney...janet got the last number 1 hit and album.
And how many copies she sold, again? We all know she had zero competition that week.
Also Michael and Whitney are dead, so this comparison is quite... inappropriate?

Lol, stop trying to belittle Janet. Their post is still true if we dont go further than the year 2001.
Didn't her album Control create a genre that all of them also used?
I love Janet but no.
If you're talking about New Jack Swing that essentially started when Teddy Riley, the pioneer of the genre, worked with Keith Sweat on his debut album.

Is she?
She has sold way less albums and records than her peers, has poor catalogue sales and tragic streaming numbers not to mention she can not sell concert tickets
It did, by a year, but the album is a lot more essentially new jack swing than Control by a long shot. While it did have some new jack swing elements, Control for the most part was still R&B and Pop while Make It Last Forever was straight new jack swing.

The youngest member of the Jackson clan, she was first in the spotlight as a child actress on the TV series Good Times and Fame. But it was with the five-times-platinum Control album in 1986 that she staked her claim as an R&B powerhouse. Working with the visionary production team of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, she fused melodic dance-pop with more aggressive beats, influenced by industrial and hip hop sounds, and helped usher in the new jack swing era. Such juggernauts as Rhythm Nation 1814 and janet. secured Jackson’s position as a global icon, as she explored themes of social justice and daring sexuality in her lyrics.

Teddy Riley credits the Control album for inspiring the sound. Janet did not create New Jack Swing. Her fusion of pop, funk, R&B and Rap sensibility, an innovative mix at its time, inspired the sound.
Even the Rock Hall said it:

There's competition every week, and with no promo, she managed to debut at #1.
Yes, MJ is dead and Whitney is no longer with us, but that doesn't negate the factuality of the post.
If I were to say Whitney sold more albums than Janet, that would be correct.
If I were to say MJ was more popular than Janet, that would also be correct.
If I were to between Madonna, Janet, Whitney, and MJ, Janet was the last one to get a #1 hit and/or #1 album, that, too, would be correct.

The rise of New Jack Swing wouldn't have happened without the success of Control. The album set NJS into motion as a commercially viable genre. Also:

And somehow her contributions to the advancement of popular culture are just as significant as theirs, to the point where they started borrowing from her template.

Lol I never said she and the Control album created it, the poster I responded to did. I agree that it influenced the sound. If one were so say that "Nasty" was the first NJS song i'd probably agree but if Control was the first NJS album and if Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis pioneered the sound vs. Teddy Riley... that's a bit debatable but I lean moreso towards Teddy and Keith Sweat's debut.
I would personally say her first NJS album was Rhythm Nation not Control but it is true that she did it before Michael (Dangerous), Whitney (IYBT), and Madonna (I don't really know when she did NJS but if she did her too).
No harm just agree to disagree. It just depens on what you classify as regular R&B, at least for the 80s, and NJS.
