I'd like to give you all an interesting insight: Bad Romance debuted with 142,000 copies sold in the first week and went on to be one of the biggest hits of the last decade, one that was also interestingly blocked by another female pop artist. Applause is likely not going to do better than Roar in the states but I'd wait before labeling a certified flop.
But "Bad Romance" was actually a good song...and also "Bad Romance" was released when she was still a relatively new artist. Given the "massive" fan-base she has accumulated since then and coming off a two year gap - the initial demand for her music should have been much more than 220K.

Bad romance is actually a good song!
Can't say the same about applause!

Being a good song has little do to with success though. Applause is just weak as a single in general, let alone a lead single.

Meh, I'm not saying Applause is better than Bad Romance but I still believe Applause will do okay. In the long run, it'll peak somewhere in the top ten.
Let's see how much Katy's first week SINGLE sales will help her to win some Grammys, get a +$180 million tour gross etc.
Anyway, Gaga has some promo coming up. We'll see how much her so-called flop will sell in the end. And I can't wait for the first week album sales for both of them.
