You know that "ratchet" and "ghetto" are terms used against black people.
It has nothing to do with being gay.

I know right? We don't need to fight over who's more oppressed

Oh boy...
I take back what I said about the lack of necessity for this article. It clearly DID need to be written.

I agree.
I would recommend taking a women's gender/queer theory/sociology class in college if you can. It definitely helps you see issues like these where you may think "it's no big deal" but in reality it is. It helps you put things in perspective.

But they are not oppressed for being white so that voids your point.

its pretty sad that 'acting white' and 'acting black' are still things. i understand what the article was trying to get at here but the presentation is a straight up mess

I've never understood why some black people are so defensive about "white people" taking "their culture". White people (as are black people) are allowed to twerk, enjoy hip-hop, talk however they want, dress however they want and express themselves however they want without "stealing black culture!!11"

You're grasping for straws.
They are oppressed for being gay not for being white they just happen to be gay and white.

And of course some of you get defensive and wanna cry oppression instead of taking what she said with some thought. She could have conducted her wording better but at the core she did not lie.

I can see that, maybe I just notice homophobia more because it affects me while racism doesn't, I don't want to go off-topic debating which group has it harder anyway. I just didn't understand why black people's struggles needed to be pointed out in the article as if they were entirely unrelated to white gays, when in fact both groups face extremely similar struggles.
I didn't like the way she seemed to belittle gay struggles as if it's just something that can be turned on or off as you please, either. Surprised Time published the article really, it doesn't exactly read very professionally

That is NOT what she said. The author CLEARLY noted that gays face struggles of their own. But unlike black women, gay people can hide (though this too poses its own struggles, obviously). Black women have no escape whatsoever.
