Despite all of our progress, being gay is still seen by society as something shameful. These types of reactions just prove it. Straight is still the superior preference.
It's sad. There's a really damaging message being sent whenever someone reacts like this: "I'm not part of your group and how dare you assume that I am. But it's ok if you are tho. #equality" Like, you can't say you stand up for equality for all social groups and then turn around and act offended that someone might consider you part of that social group. That's the most backhanded kind of support. Nobody wants to be part of the "less than" group.
And in the case of this article, his reaction doesn't even make sense. It never even suggested that he might be gay.
They literally built their personas off of the fact that they would do "gay things" to each other and get all the fangirls and gay boys hot and bothered. Now that they're all grown up they suddenly get offended at the slightest mention that they might be gay. 
Zayn is of course flawless (and maybe Niall too). We all know his marriage to Perrie is fake af but at least he doesn't act all pissy when people bring it up. The others are a mess, and over-react to every little thing.
I clearly remember as early as 2012 there was a whole series of tweets that went out from "Liam" with perfect grammar, then were deleted and re-tweeted with his signature spelling mistakes and missing punctuation. 'Cause that's not sketchy at all.
