Let's not get carried away, this isn't bigger than Thriller. The market prior to 1982 was actually very similar to the market now--- very singles driven. There really weren't that many massive selling albums after the Beatles ended their reign (and even the Beatles sold a good portion of their records after they broke up). Thriller is what really ushered in the era of huge albums like Purple Rain and Born in the USA.
