Meh. The majority of pop music has always been meaningless and generic. If you're looking for deep and meaningful music, you need to search for another genre. You won't hear it on your radio, you won't see it on the charts, and you won't hear it in clubs. I still don't see where I asked for deep and meaningful in the OP, all I asked about is lyrics in general.

Some of Michael Jackson's biggest hits from the 80's and 90's have the worst lyrics yet are ICONIC in every way. With electro and dance music taking over, yeah actually having lyrics in a song is becoming obsolete. I don't even listen to pop music outside of my favorite vocalists because I know what to expect..... a dumbass song with ****** vocals over a cheap ass beat. I'm not here for THAT.


As it relates to Beyonce, she is a piss poor lyricist but she is a great hitmaker in the fact that she knows her audience and how to market her music to them to get their money/ support. I agree that its her ear for melodies, her arrangements and overall musical know how that warrants her praise and acclaim but not her actual lyrics. But to be fair, I don't think any of the Pop veterans are great songwriters except maybe P!nk who actually talks about other things outside of the usual romance, heartache & haters/I'm a diva standards.

I am more into lyrics, but I do listen to the occasional dance song. But the whole dance trend is getting boring. I think that the breakthrough of Adele shows that lyrics still hold some importance.
