He didn't hide anything, he's always been v. open and himself.
I mean, he's dressed in drag multiple times and some of his behavioral tendencies.
He just never felt the need to announce it.

This has been known pretty much for years. But why not long ago did Colton say he was straight, but supported gay rights and had a brother who was gay - or have I got the wrong celeb?

He also did deny being gay when those pics were circulating on tumblr years back,

Did you bother reading the article, or...? He clearly wasn't happy and comfortable with telling the public, regardless of whether "everyone" knew or not. His anxiety made him very ill. Congrats to him for having the courage to come out, especially when there is so much vitriol from within our own community.
