FYI, labels don't always use the smash hit as the lead single. They also use songs that have potential to be a hit but need the push and hype more. Mostly it's songs that are growers and I think Perfect Illusion fits this to the T. Use Mr. Know It All and Stronger as example. Stronger would've smashed hard either way. MKIA wouldn't have went top 10 if it weren't the lead single. It's actually smart to use a mellow/grower song as the lead single so it can benefit from a bigger push.
So for all we know Perfect Illusion might be one of the least radio friendly songs on the album.
You ain't got the right to tell me
When and where to go
No right to tell me
Thank you for reminding me about this cute bop.
Now bring on the Florence collab after this and slay me down Gags.
Its a shock that she has zero chill in putting her fans through this trash again, why cant she just accept her so called art and keep quiet, she made the song, every single song on the album should make her proud, instead now she's blaming her LABEL for her own Bossy behavior that didn't let the three producers tweak PI to perfection and the insider stuff on her label frustrated with her big ego refusing them any form of control and advice. How about not even tweaking PI and releasing a better version. Now i officially see Gaga is done with being a pop musician. I love her work with Tony Bennett and i think she should from now onwards do collabs with Tony Bennett and forget Pop music.
Leave your Pop weave to Taylor Swift,Rihanna,Beyonce,Katy Perry and Adele atleast when they flop, they flop with dignity and go for plan B
DWUW had much more appeal than Applause (both lyrics and sound) yet they still chose Applause as the first single. These label execs aren't always the brightest.
DWUW wasn't finished until a month after Applause came out. The label picked it as Single #2 immediately, and scrapped Gaga's choice (Venus).
If that's the most radio friendly song on the album....
Might not be tbh.
Sometimes the lead is a little less hit worthy because the label thinks the artists lead single hype can carry it on it's own...where as most of the time the second single is like a sure fire hit. (not saying her 2nd single will be a hit tho )

You have examples like Kelly with MKIA/WDKY but you also have Ariana with DW/IY,though DW went top 10 and PI is...probably not going to hit it?
