It went #1 on pop and HAC and #4 on AC, so It's not like radio didn't support her like you suggested. Plus. If you look at Pink's discography. You'll see that she isn't really that consistent with her singles like Katy is. Finally, I would argue that the general public likes more pop rock softer songs nowadays.

Clearly AC won't have dance music even if it is summer. If you only want Katy to be #1 on the AC chart then fine but I'd rather see success across all media.

Sorry, I didn't see your mention about pop. At the same time the trend back then wasn't ALL about summer = party. I know that summer had Promiscuous but it also had other hits like Unfaithful and Ridin' Dirty. For the past four summers, almost all "smashes" have been fun, party dance music.
