Demi has the backstory though, and she's Simon's biggest chance of creating the Cheryl Cole type figure in the US - she definitely has had the appropriate year for the whole overcoming adversity redemption arc, and is well advised on how to deal with life in the spotlight adn the pressures of fame. She has a lot of goodwill coming her way at the moment, and so while she's undoubtedly very young, she actually wouldn't be a bad choice as far as bringing in the demographic goes, and 'creating' a new personna for the press.
