I read a little more about Selena's character on The Getaway, don't know if it's true tho.
But we already know that Ethan's character's wife gets wife-napped ( ) and Ethan goes off to find her and the reason Selena's character fits into this is Ethan steals her car to chase them down.
But apparently Selena's character is named Fran and she's a young wife and gets seduced by a bank robber and because he steals her car she's forced to go with him. So I'm guessing Ethan's character isn't as much of a good guy and some enemies of his or w/e take his wife.
