Actually, it doesn't. Going by ATRL Logic, since 4 had no hits whatsoever, it's a flop. Plain and simple.

Femme Fatal had 2 hits, Britney's greatest AI numbers and both singles sold more then 2 million copies (I believe). Why is Femme Fatal not over the 1 million mark here in the US? Smash hits are supposed to sell the album.

This reason would also put Talk That Talk right behind Femme Fatal.

Now that we can choose 'Teenage Dream' too, my vote goes to that one.

After five #1 singles from which each spended multiple weeks at the top + a hit ballad,
the album should have pulled a 'The E.N.D.' or 'The Fame'. Multiple times Platinum, that's what we're expecting with singles that sell a shitload, get a lot of Airplay and amazing chart succes.

For it to have such a disappointing and low opening after such a huge monster single says a lot about Rihanna's ability, or lack thereof, to sell albums.

Beyonce and Rihanna have pretty much the same WW sales with a 4/5 month gap, though, with only one really big hit, Birthday Cake currently climbing the charts (without being on iTunes) and without Where Have Been taking its run. Besides, she sold around 500k worldwide in her first week.

Born This Way. Really. It was expected to have humongous sales especially with all the hype and promotion. And Gaga was coming off a huge era. Not to mention it's impressive first week sales.

On the other hand, Femme Fatale, a decent album with a decent promotion, sold the exact amount it should have. Talk That Talk is a Rihanna album so no disappointment there. I mean c'mon who was expecting TTT to sold that much. And 4, no matter how amazing it is, is not just the type of album that an artist like Beyonce can sell like hotcakes.

Gaga overhyped her **** and as a result the end sales were disappointing albeit relatively good when put up against her contemporaries. FF, 4, TTT, and TD all performed poorly. As I said, all of them were disappointing in some way or another sales-wise.
