Alternative Band, Coldplay sold over 4 Million copies of Mylo Xyloto in 5 months. Rock/Alternative has a solid fanbase and if both were to be merged, the gap would even be bigger.

Rock always sells. And it has been like that for years.

It says in the article that section is talking about "track sales" (so it doesn't include albums), and it already has a category for "alternative rock", and doesn't mention hip hop. Hip hop hasn't been that big this year, but whoever wrote that article is probably including songs like Good Feeling, Starships, etc. in that total, so it is possible. I follow iTunes a lot, and there hasn't been enough rock music in there to account for a quarter of the sales.
