Single sales are the only thing that I feel aren't as important as people think. Album sales, tour ticket sales, etc. are.
Both Gaga and Katy slayed with album sales and tour ticket sales, but because Gaga is an album and touring artist, she came out ahead.
Everything went perfect for Katy during the TD era. It was an era that every artist wants to have, but a perfect era doesn't always translate to impact.
Lmao, I'm getting confused by all of the replies. D:

Thing that Katy managed to sell more than 10 times x her debut week, and Gaga not even doubling it may say something.

teenage dream was successful in the U.S for singles, i would say album too but she had 5 #1 i would aspect more then 3mill copies sold. BTW was successful WW for albums selling 5.8 mill copies within a year + singles did better WW then in the U.S. the BTW tour is gonna outgross TD tour without a doubt. it was also a new sound for gaga, this album was nowhere near generic, this was gaga's experimental album.
from a pop radio friendly single album - katy, to a experimental album with different sounds - gaga. i feel as gaga takes the vote from me WW & U.S AND katy wins U.S. i like both artist though =]

And yet Gaga still sold more albums with two flops and no tour.

Why do people bring **** like this up only when it's convenient for their fave? "Well, she had Adele to compete with so that doesn't matter," but when it comes time to talk **** about somebody else, they suck?
BTW is Gaga's worst performing era so far, sure, but Katy's TD era has been colossal, yet she raked in nothing. What do you think is honestly more embarrassing?

People act like Gaga was the only person to lose against Adele, like it was just Adele and Gaga nominated in every category.

I know you meant to shade Gaga but you did the exact opposite, especially since Gaga has sold more
Anyway, TD era wasn't only singles success for Katy. It did blow up her name to be something more than it was and now she's considered a serious top popgirl contender. BTW had Gaga moving in a different direction, while still good, doesn't have the same kind of success Katy's era brought her. They just aren't comparable in that sense.

How is he shading Katy?
She started selling 190k and ended up selling more than 2.1 million.
Gaga started selling more than 1 million and today, less than one year, and she's selling 10k and is charting lower than Teenage Dream (released in 2010).

I could sell those numbers if the hype was that high. Joke. But you are trying too hard to defend Gaga, and the real truth is that nothing can save her in future. Yes, this tour will be great, she is still relevant in some way. But... People look at her like on a circus freak, no one really cares about her music anymore (fans excluded). If there was some poll on a worldwide level, I am sure that 90% of people would pick Katy or Riri over Gaga. And it was the other way around 3 years ago. And lets wait for both Katy and Gaga next albums and compare sales. Gaga put herself in a very difficult position... :/ I just hope she can deliver some good music in future, even if it goes Xtina way...

You're completely ignoring the fact that BORN THIS WAY SOLD MORE THAN TEENAGE DREAM and it took her less than a year to do so even with no tour and singles that didn't even come close to the success that the TD singles accomplished...

This is nice and all, but tour ticket sales, demand, and overall record sales disagree with you.
100,000,000 records in three years. What about Katy and Rihanna?
I mean, the only person trying hard is you by belittling Gaga's massive success.

Because the fact she is now "selling 10x more than she did" and she STILL hasn't sold more only makes somebody imagine the embarrassing numbers she's had to deal with. It sums it up to a smash era that still couldn't push her album sales above mediocre.
If we are going to say BTW wasn't a good era because of Gaga's past standards she set (which everybody does), we can do the same for Katy. For such a massive era, her album sales should be much higher. If you don't agree, you can't say BTW was an unsuccessful era.

But even when Gaga is a bigger star than Katy and sold an impressive 1 million first week...
83 84 94 31 * PERRY*KATY TEENAGE DREAM 11311 110 5375 2108255
44 97 131 87 * LADY GAGA BORN THIS WAY 4748 20 3956 2191973
That's the B200 receipts the week (before The Complete Confection release).... Katy was charting at #31 with 11k sold and Gaga at #87 with less than 5k sold...

No, it's not embarrasing. Teenage Dream has sold almost the same than the second album of one of the biggest popstars out there. BTW sales are great, so Katy selling 5 million and selling 30 million singles show how big TD era is.

Gaga was THE MOST POPULAR PERSON IN THE WORLD for over two years. I do not deny that, but now I just feel embarrassed for her when I see how she downgraded herself in every way possible...

And. Yet. It. Still. Hasn't. Out. Sold. Born. This. Way.
Keep shading your own fave.
