And of course you need big hits to shift albums. BTW hasn't sold half of what TF(M) managed to sell, and even if you factor in the re-release aspect of it, TF(M) still would have sold in excess of 10 million units WW. Comparing Gaga to Rihanna doesn't make sense, because Gaga is a proven album seller. She needs to be commercial in her choice of singles.
|
I used to think that, but not anymore. Gaga has always been given in insane amount of freedom. It has nothing to do with Gaga's freedom and all about what Gaga wants to do. If she wants commercial success, she will have it. If she doesn't, then we're gonna have to deal with her putting out music that will not catch on. It really has nothin' to do with Interscope controlling her.
Also, can you explain to me how the sales are broken down?
The Fame alone: 7m+ WW
The Fame Monster alone: 6.5m+ WW
Born This Way: 6m+ WW
Didn't most of the sales of the re-release also go towards The Fame's numbers, which is why it's at 14m+ WW?
If that's the case, then her album sales have been incredibly consistent.

She can still have some freedom but she's still fairly new in the music biz and has a lot of learning to do

Interscope should know better, though. They have been in the business for years and years and should know what happens when you give an artist too much untested creative control. That was a mistake on their part...

I love that Gaga does what she wants. I mean, its her career, that's what an artist should do!

And Gaga hasn't been given an insane amount of freedom until BTW. Jeff himself said that they let her choose the singles this era, and that MTN was the final straw for Interscope. It has everything to do with them controlling her, to be honest. She has taken to much creative control and they have sat back and watched her.
The Fame had sold around 5M copies WW when it was re-released. It currently stands at around 15-16m WW, meaning the re-release of TF+TFM asold 10-11M copies WW. TFM (EP) sold around 2-2.5M copies WW.
So yeah, more of the sales from the re-release went to TF, but it was because of TFM that it ended up selling so much

I love it too, but the public clearly isn't here for it. And as much as I love it, I don't want to end up stanning for a cult artist. I want to stan for an artist that I know is going to be played on the radio and in clubs, because that way I can enjoy her music more. And I'm not saying I stan for success either, simply that I want her to make music that the general public can enjoy, because that way I can enjoy it with people, which is so much better than listening to it alone

I believe that Interscope know what they're doing.. I mean, look at The Black Eyed Peas. After a very long break ( I tought they faded to be honest), they came with one of the biggest hits in music history. So, I don't think that Interscope are doing anything wrong. They just CANT let Gaga lose her power like.

Okay, so since it only sold that much because of the re-release, I don't think it's fair to say "Well, BTW didn't sell as much" when it didn't have a re-release + a tour, if that makes sense.

From the way they promote and control their artists, Interscope is more interested in forming artists that will last instead of artists that can churn out hit after hit. I mean, that is why they're one of the few major labels that is not about to go bankrupt. I don't see anything they've done with Gaga as a mistake because they've made millions and are about to make more with the tour.

They won't let her lose her power. That is why, as Jeff said, MTN was the final straw. They are retaking control, apparently.

It is fair, however, to say that BTW only sold maybe 700k more than Gaga's debut album before its re-release (and remember TF hadn't just stopped selling when TFM came out). Then, TFM managed to sell twice as much as BTW.
Considering the hype and promotion behind BTW, there must have been a problem somewhere.

For me, the main problem this era is the hype. I'm sure if they didn't hype the album much it won't sell much in the 1st week ( I'm not disliking the 1st week sales or something like that..) . And the singles would have been more succeful. I mean, when everyone will own the album and it's cheaper than the singles, why would they buy them ??

Since when did TFM sell 12m copies WW? I thought it was at 5m WW...
How was there a problem? Only in this fanbase is 6m WW considered a problem.

When did he say this?
You would think Alejandro or Judas wouldn't have been the last straw, but it apparently wasn't.
