The E.N.D. was a fun dance album, I stand by my claim
Single Ladies is one of many tracks that are great on IASF. Give it a listen.
Oh, and California Gurls isn't even on one of those albums
I mistook TF for Teenage Dream. My mistake.
Oh I get it now, we're talking about the album with "Just Dance" and "Boys, Boys, Boys" on it. Sorry.
I've given IASF a listen. It's an incredibly vapid album - emotional 'signifiers' without ever actually exploring love or heartbreak deeper than surface level, e.g. 'Halo' and 'Broken-Hearted Girl'. Incredibly vapid. It's not a bad album, though. "Disappear" and "Hello" are amazing. "Sweet Dreams" *****, too.
I'm not exactly mad...mainly because I didnt necessarily think Bey deserved it either but I'm just not interested in Taylor Swift...her material is boring and one-trick pony-ish...out of the nominees I would've been least satisfied with her win so it left me bothered naturally...her beating out my fave was insult to injury
Grammys are about vocal and songwriting ability. Taylor doesn't have a great voice and her lyrics are immature and decent at best. Taylor is an awesome girl who deserves her success, but she did not deserve that AOTY win.
Again, people throw around words like 'immature' without ever backing it up with examples. I mean, unless you object to a high school student giving a few references throughout the album to the fact that she is in high school, I don't understand what you are referring to.
"Fearless" *****. I don't like that kind of music, but she did it great. End Of.

That's like is Katy perry keeps making music that would be on Tennage Dream, wtf. She needs to mature lyrically. I give her all the praise for writing her own stuff and whatnot, but enough is enough. it was cute at first, but it times to move on.
She said speak now, and I just did. Get it together TayTay.
the only song she has wrote after TD sessions is "Wide Awake". And that's still part of "Teenage Dream" Just give her a chance

This is from Speak Now:
Dear John
Never Grow Up
STILL so far away from this: Tears in Heaven - Eric Clapton.
But she still has time to grow, let it be as natural as possible. Things that are forced won't end good anyway.

You must now know what "immature" means. The lyrics are cute, but it gets to a point where it's just like, "Really? Cry a little and get over it," and that is what makes it immature.

I think her songwriting is very mature....and shes growing and maturing all the time. What song is immature? FIfteen? Just because it talks about a time when she was younger? When millions of her fans that age can relate? White horse? Best Day? Change? Maybe YBWM is a bit childish, but its a hella lot more mature than, i got that boom boom pow, bitches be jackin my style
I mean, it's especially hilarious that people accuse her of needing to hop off her crutch of 'princes and princess fairytales' and 'high school love' and other apparently immature things, when THAT'S WHAT THE ENTIRE ALBUM IS ALL ABOUT. Deconstructing and breaking down those fantasies until you're left with what's real (see 'White Horse') and what's important (see 'The Best Day'). That's what gets me the most about a large proportion of Taylor detractors; THEY'VE NEVER BOTHERED ACTUALLY LISTENING TO THE MUSIC.

Really the only princess fairy tale song is TWAFT, white horse is like the anti princess fairy tale love song. Love story? Romeo and Juliet is a Shakespearean play people, Juliet wasn't a princess.

Still waiting on concrete examples.
Much of the album deals explicity with "getting over it". In 'Breathe', for example she sings "It's killing me to see you go after all this time" but recognises that "people are people and sometimes we change our minds" as well as "I can't breathe without you but I have to". It's an incredibly mature response.
Also this is my personal opinion, but I think other than it's one of the most commercially & critically successful. NARAS since 2009 has decided to go left field, trying to rebuild their credibility.
2009 - Alison Krauss & Robert Plant, Raising Sand
2010 - Taylor Swift, Fearless
2011 - Arcade Fire, The Suburbs
2012 - Adele, 21
Notice the similarities from each album. Those albums are about human emotions. Simple, true, raw, not overproduced. I even thought that the using of real instruments is a factor too.
Talking about Fearless. That album was a collection of stories about teenager's life. Doesn't matter which song is about who, it's the emotion of the song. If you really pay attention to it, no, that album is not all about love. One song for example, is thank-you song to her mom, also where she said that her brother is a 'better person' than her, and how her dad is a smart guy for marrying her mom.
Also little detail that I love from this album is, how loud & alive the guitars here. It's like a live band recording, done in an old school way.
Fearless is not an album that is full of love & heartbreak only. It's an album about her being a teenager.
Fearless is about her days being a teenager (16-18 to be exact). About things she went through. What do you expect from teenagers around that age anyway? Partying every day? Good music is music that people can connect to. Music that is honest. Where the artist writes songs about what he/she knows. Songwriter's job is to write good songs. And good songs are songs that can make you feel better after you listen to it. Not just making you tap your feet while listening to it. Some people connect with Fearless, some don't. That simple.
Actually talking about how important awards are kinda ridiculous. Since awards are given just as a way to say thank you by the industry, not about A is better than B. Since when does actually awards equal to quality? Awards are nothing. Justin Vernon said it better than me about how relevant awards are actually.
Exactly, which is why an EDM artist will never win Album of the Year.
I'd also like to add to the list:
2005 - Ray Charles - Genius Loves Company
2006 - U2 - How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb
2007 - The Dixie Chicks - Taking The Long Way
2008 - Herbie Hancock - Rivers: The Joni Letters

Do you expect people to know lyrics to songs they dont enjoy listening to by heart??
You make it hard to have a debate with that logic. When I listened to Fearless I didnt wanna hear it again and outside of this thread I couldn't possibly tell you any of the singles at all. It'd be different if people were blind hating her but most people I see just dont care about her because she isnt interesting. Its not because she doesnt strip or sing about sex and drugs, its because she has virtually no depth at all. Her content seems like it came out of a journal and her album seem like they're crafted from the Disney channel. Of course, nobody can knock her for constantly catering to her core fanbase but based of listening to Fearless and hearing the singles from Speak Now she has made virtually no artistic progression which would explain why Speak Now did nothing at the Grammy's this year.
She cant perform, she isnt a capable vocalist, she has no depth, she doesnt have an adult fanbase which makes it embarassing for an adult to like her, she's a female justin bieber with an ounce of substance and questionable integrity.

If you feel confident enough in your knowledge of her music to describe it as immature and shallow, then yes I think actually backing up those statements with an example or two shouldn't be too hard.
It's people like YOU who make it impossible to debate, because you give me absolutely nothing to go against. You can hide behind thin arguments like 'she isn't interesting' or 'she has no depth' but if you give no indication as to WHY you think this, then it's impossible to have an actual conversation.
I think I, contrary to what you just wrote, make it very EASY to debate. I give actual solid evidence for my reasoning. That poster says she's immature because she needs to "get over it", and I gave an explicit example from the album which is all about getting over things.
'No artistic progression' is laughable and objectively incorrect; see her development from 'Teardrops On My Guitar' to 'Dear John' and 'Safe & Sound'.

Some might argue that sex takes emotions too. Yes. No denying on that.
But AOTY winners have always been albums that are about human emotions or way of thinking. Singing about love especially, there's gonna be at least one or two lines that will refer to sex. But that's it. The main theme is still about love, or heartbreak. NOT ****ing like animals.
If I want to know how a wild sex would like, I'll go watch Discovery Channel instead. Lions ****ing in the wild is more entertaining IMO.
And about EDM will never win at AOTY category. That's something that NARAS should work at. Have they listened to Armin van Buuren or Dash Berlin? They do have stuffs that are not about sex only. And they are great.
