The only thing Rihanna's ever done to make her a bad role model was the Chris Brown collaboration, but that doesn't even seem as bad in retrospect as it did then. I don't see how her lyrics/image are any worse than Gaga/Katy/Britney's.
And it really shouldn't matter how good of a role model she is anyway because A) she never acted in a way that suggested kids should emulate her, and B) if parents raise their kids correctly, it shouldn't matter what celebrities do.
And this guy's overall attitude is pretty sexist if he thinks her behavior is degrading.
Another thing: the vast majority of pop songs are about love or sex and if not, they're about partying & getting drunk. It's clearly not designed to teach people about right & wrong, and it's definitely not for kids.
So I just do not understand why pop stars are always expected to be role models when their songs aren't even preaching these messages. These people are exposed via mass media and suddenly they have to be more than they are, because more people are watching them. It doesn't really make sense.
This kills me how are Gaga and Adele good role models?? Adele is a heavy smoker that flipped off the paparazzi and Gaga smokes crack...
Adele shows that you don't have to a skinny girl to make it far into this world and Gaga, a girl that's not the most attractive mind you, wants people to accept and love themselves.
Rihanna doesn't need to be a role model if she doesn't want to. Parents need to learn raise their own kids, not their pop stars.
Why is it that I never see any other female, or male, pop star getting flack but Rihanna....?
Compared to the things Janet and Madonna did/sung about in their heyday, the things Rihanna do are is childish.
The entire tone of this article feels very sexist to me, tbh.

I know right! Love leads to sex. Being in clubs generally leads to getting drunk. It doesn't make sense either. It irritates me.

Adele is pretty. And weight never came into it. She was a big girl, but her music is what attracts people. You put Adele's voice and music onto Rihanna at 19 (ie switching places) with a debut, and people would love her same way. I agree about the parents bit. I think Gaga is attractive without make up, but with it she looks worse.

The same criticism followed Janet and Madonna back in the day. Most recently, the same criticism followed Britney Spears up until only recently. In time, the critics move on and the artistic merit of it lives on with fans. Rihanna is just the current scapegoat because she's the newest to become more aggressive with her sexuality, actions, and persona. She hasn't followed the stereotypical model of what the male-driven society tells females they need to dress and act like to empower themselves.

Because people love to read & talk about rihanna. Because she overcame unfortunate circumstances and is now one of the biggest artists out right now, she is a success story, shes beautiful, she has everything going for her. But she doesn't fit into what a lot of people want her to be; a squeaky clean, respectable, goody two shoes singer, someone kids can really look up to. I find she gets a lot more media attention post-2009 than what she had before, because people saw her overcome abuse and thought she would be a perfect figure for people to look up to. But she doesn't want that because she isn't that person.
And yeah it did come off as a bit sexist to me too. Gaga exposes herself a lot too and yet she didn't get any flack from this guy for that. I think it's because rihanna comes off as very sexual because of her looks, and that's before she even takes her clothes off. So she gets crucified more in the media for that, even though she is doing just as much as any other popster does.
And I'm sorry but you have to have some real ****ed up self esteem if you're looking at pop stars as your role models.
Exactly!!
And what is this **** about Rihanna having to write empowering lyrics because she is a woman and she has young fans, why is it men/ rappers can write about dumb **** like bitches and *****s and all this kinda **** easily but when a woman just write simple fun lyrics shes terrible because shes not giving women a good example, and who the **** is Will anyway, any next feminist queen who no1 uses
She isn't in a relationship with him though, there is speculation but it isn't confirmed so sit

I don't know about y'all but when I was growing up if I turned on the tv and something like Sex & The City was on, my mother didn't need to be there for me to know I shouldn't be watching it and definitely not to learn from it. Why? Because my parents taught me. Children know. But it's up to parents to teach them what's right and what's wrong. Not people on TV

Janet & Madonna had a reason for doing what they were doing. Janet had her moment with " rhythm nation 1814" were she talks about important issues like world peace etc. Even in her later work she talked about Gays, self-expression and other issues. While Madonna career as you said was to break the mold of what a women she be. She showed it in the most liberal and sometimes drastic ways as possible which was fine & necessary at the time despite most people not getting it. In end the they weren't rebelling just to rebel and be "bad ass gangsta chicks". They had a reason and stood up for something. That's the difference between Rihanna and them. Rihanna stands for nothing. She's just a popstar who makes good music. Nothing more and nothing less. Don't try to exaggerate her to be something she isn't and clearly doesn't want to be.
