Singer also hails Adele, Lady Gaga and Annie Lennox
Will Young has criticised Rihanna - claiming she is a poor role model for women.
The Pop Idol winner said Ri-Ri's lyrics also lacked any power, despite the fact he thinks she's a great pop star.
Young said: I don't think Rihanna is a massively great role model for women, her lyrics aren't empowering. She's a brilliant pop star and recording artist but her lyrics are not empowering - young girls have to listen to those lyrics.
He added: "I saw Rihanna kissing a girl in one of her videos ['S&M'] and I thought who is this for? If you're going to do it just go the whole way like Madonna did and have sex on a bed.
"Women in a patriarchal society should be empowering and owning their bodies, I don't think Rihanna is. I feel quite strongly about this."
Young also praised Adele for being empowering and Lady Gaga.
He added: "Image wise Lady Gaga is empowering. I'm more interested in women like Annie Lennox or Grace Jones, people who have challenged the female form who have owned it and brought it forward."
Rihanna has been criticised on several occasions over her image. The video for her single 'We Found Love' was described as a "disgrace" by anti-rape campaigners after it showed her being spanked by male model Dudley O'Shaughnessy.
And US pressure groups called for the video for her single 'Man Down' to be banned after they claimed it promoted murder, although she insisted it could help "give a voice to victims". The video portrayed her shooting an attacker after being raped.
People need to stop trying to pressure these celebs into being role models. Let them do what makes them happy. Who says they should have to conform to what you want them to say and do?
I see no lies told at all. But RiRi probs doesn't even know who he is so she's not likely to care

And who the **** said her lyrics needed to be empowering. Since when do little girls listen to empowering **** anyway? All I see is 9 year olds boppin to Put It in Yo Mouth
Did she ask to be? Why can't women have multiple role models? Also he lost me with the gaga being good while Rihanna is bad...I can understand Adele. Also as a woman I don't need a man telling me what would be a good role model for me.
She's never been a role model, nor does she she need to be, nor should she be.
Although, she did try to be one for a minute. And we saw how that turned out.
If you think a woman has to empower and 'own their body' then you're not being a feminist, you're being a woman-hater. A woman should be able to sing about whatever the **** they want.
I don't think Rihanna is making music because she wants to be a good role model, she does it because she likes it and since Rihanna seems not to care, no problem.
