There's not been a black female artist with the brand power that Beyoncé has. Aside from the music aspect which include: great vocals (Janet ain't serving it), great performances (Rihanna ain't serving it), great dance moves (Whitney ain't serving it), and continual success without a group (Diana couldn't do it like Beyoncé), she's also a strong brand and business woman.
She epitomizes the kind of business success only female musicians like Madonna see. She's probably the true black Madonna putting aside their night and day contrasts.

No, it really isn't. Janet has had at least as much influence on music as Whitney. She just doesn't get the credit she deserves.
It's easy to look at The Voice and American Idol and point to Whitney as their raison d'être. But people who are ALREADY household names in the industry--who didn't need a talent show to make it to the top--are here because of Janet. Britney, Aaliyah, Rihanna(!), Ciara, Missy Elliott and many more were heavily influenced by Janet. That speaks volumes, to me. We don't need a show to find "the next Janet" because her legacy has already been shining in so many other women.

Exactly..... they would NEVER waste time on Janet's tired ass. Who would? Maybe KMart since Janet likes pathetic D List endorsements

Janet for her dance/songs/music videos, Whitney for her voice, Beyoncé for her performances. IDK who to choose.
And I love Diana, but people nowadays don't remember her, so in 20/30 years she definitely WON'T be remembered. Endless Love and Upside Down will remain classics tho.

20-30 years from now, when my generation is middle-aged, Beyonce or Rihanna -assuming that she maintains her success- will probably be considered as the ultimate black female pop star. After those two comes Mariah Carey.

Look at it this way, Janet came out in the 80's along with Whitney, so how the hell did Mariah get a tribute before she did? I know yall say Janet ruined her career with the nipplegate scandal and all but girl please, the thing is she just isnt as famous or memorable as the other singers, she is VERY popular yes, but if you leave America and ask anyone who the TOP BLACK FEMALE SINGER ever is they will say these names.
BEYONCE (cause its true)
Whitney Houston (cause its true)
Aretha Franklin (to sound educated)
Rihanna ( )
And this poll is basically showing the results, Janet is even close to Bey/Whit, which is disturbing but true.

And outside of her voice what did Whitney truly do? She was never that special to me outside of her voice.
NOTHING she did was groundbreaking to me. She never even wrote her own songs. Her biggest song ever is a cover of someone else's work.

You keep saying "to me." At the end of the day, Whitney was always above Janet to the public and industry.
Sure Janet had her moment where she eclipsed Whitney, but she never had a level of dominance that Whitney had during The Bodyguard era. Didn't The Bodyguard movie and soundtrack basically overshadow the janet. and Poetic Justice eras?
And I'm not trying to take anything away from Janet. Eli and others would vouch for me and say that I LOVE Janet and have defended her a lot on this board.

Even when Whitney was made fun of, she wasn't blacklisted & seen as an enemy like Janet was.
You can't compare Whitney's drug lows to Janet's career low.
Even before Whitney's death she was still praised heavily between the jokes.
Like Playboy said, those singing type shows look for the next Whitney and have "Whitney Song Week"s. Even when being made fun of she was still seen as someone to aspire to be.

Whitney has THREE best selling albums of all time, Madonna has THREE, Celine has FOUR, Mariah, Michael, EVERYONE but Janet, does it get any clearer? Beyonce is one of the best selling artists of (her time) and by a huge margin too, she is ahead of every other black female artist just like Whitney was in every area.
|
Control & RN1814 (14 million+), and janet. (20 million) are all among the best selling albums of all time. It should also be noted that Janet is only one of three Black women to have an album sell 20 million.
Yes Janet has sold less than her contemporaries, but it comes as a result of Janet selling R&B, which doesn't sell as much internationally, as her peers were doing pop music. It explains why artists like Rihanna, Beyonce, and Ciara don't have albums that have sold like Britney or Xtina's debut, or even The Fame.

Stephen Hill wanted Janet to be the recipient of the 2011 Bet Awards but he said she couldn't do it because she had a concert that day.

What tribute did Mariah get?
Janet got MTV ICON award in 2001 with ALL YOUR FAVES praising her. Sit down.
And where are you getting these facts that International people don't know Janet? Did you travel to japan, australia, and europe and ask these people yourself? Where are the receipts other than you pulling stuff out of thin air.
You don't sell hundreds of million of records, and sell out WORLD tours with people not knowing you.

Whitney has never been a joke? You mean the countless times MadTV has parodied her has a drug addict? How the tabloids have drug her name in the mud during the 2000s? How stans on forums have dragged her name and called her a crack head? The fact that she didn't appear on a second season of "Being Bobby Brown" because her team felt it was painting her in a negative light? Whitney was a joke in the 2000s up until she died. And the reason why Whitney had a successful album was because it was labeled as a comeback album - her first in 7 years. That was an excellent marketing ploy that worked.
People were over Superbowl prior to MJ's death. Janet was in a better place with Discipline, and ppl were over Janet once again months after MJ died. She rebuilt her own name. And the greatest hits is meant to sale over time, it's it's pointless to bring that up imo. And if you're comparing flop albums in the 2000s, Just Whitney scanned 736K to Damita Jo's 1.04mil.
|
Hasn't Whit's label been saying she sold over 200M records for the longest time? And haven't they said she's the best-selling female? It would look pretty ridiculous if she hadn't sold 200M and they still called her that when Madonna and Celine sold so much more.

Whitney was portrayed as more of a tragic victim, outside of the occasional parody.
|
20 Y.O. was supposed to be a comeback album too. Even if Janet didn't say so. It was an obvious ploy for nostalgia sales.
I forgot Just Whitney was such a bomb. That's a good point.

Sweetie you can throw your hate out the window. Crazy in Love is a pop STANDARD and always will be, the fact that it is THE MOST CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED pop song by a female artist OF ALL TIME speaks volumes. It has already placed on ALL TIME lists and it isnt even 10 years old yet, one of the most recognizable songs ever.
Single Ladies. nugh said!
All it takes is one, and she has TWO songs that will NEVER be forgotten!
Not to mention Halo, Irreplaceable and the songs she has yet to make.
Her name makes mountains fall, people rise to their feet, Beyonce the name alone is legendary.
Dont act new.
