Was/is Madonna more of a co-writer or main writer?
Does she get credit as a co-writer or as the main lyricist?

Co-writing, mostly. I believe Madonna has a general concept for each album, and collaborates with the songwriters to make the songs. But she doesn't write them most of the times, just make some changes and contributions here and there.
However, she's very involved in the production of her music and her albums

Well, I'd say it's half and half. She has some songs where she takes the already given concept and makes it her own but then I'm sure there are other songs where she is the main writer.

She has co-writing credits on every album.
As well as co-producing credits on the later albums such as Confessions, Hard Candy, and MDNA.

I don't think she is much involved with the beginning of writing. I think she asks producers for what she wants, sees what they come up with, and develop the rest with them. As someone else said, she's much more involved in the producing aspect.
I'd say though when she works with Orbit, they go in together and come up with the concept. It really depends. But I'd say most of the time the concept is given to her and she builds on it.

She has co-producing credits in pretty much every song of every album since True Blue (1986), actually.

A number of her hits were written primarily or entirely by other people; "Like a Virgin," "Holiday," "Borderline," "Open Your Heart," "Ray of Light," "Justify My Love," "Material Girl," "Papa Don't Preach," "La Isla Bonita," "Don't Tell Me," "Crazy For You," "Take a Bow," and "Dressing Up."
When she started getting more hands-on with her writing is when her music started going downhill.

"Like a Prayer" disagrees.
From what I know, "La Isla Bonita" was first offered for Michael - but, after that, she was the one who came up with the lyrics, in a trip to Japan.
"Ray of Light" is almost a cover.
I'm not sure about "Don't Tell Me".
"Take a Bow" wasn't written by her?
But the rest she didn't write.

However, Erotica and American Life certainly don't.

Her lyrics on the Like a Prayer, Erotica Bedtime Stories and Ray of Light albums are her best though...And she has all the writing credits on all the songs (except the one Björk wrote that Madonna changed anyway).

I'm not talking lyrically, I'm talking musically.
In terms of lyrics though, Like a Prayer, Erotica, and Bedtime Stories all had their moments. Ray of Light was strong all the way through though, IMO; A really well-written album.
