It was dull until Gaga came along and injected life back into the industry, she made it fun again. She most certainly made pop music videos a cultural event again that the masses look forward to. Hopefully her next era will be reminiscent of TFM era.

My thoughts as well. She's entirely capable, so I'm hoping BTW was a detour.

Not really though. "Popular" music doesn't just refer to the pop girls (Britney, Katy, Kesha, Rihanna etc.). There was a time that bands were considered "pop" music, in the way that The Beatles were. The music created events. It was less about gimmicks and more about the music and artist. They identified with the musician and treated the work as something more than a throwaway single that will chart high.
The music had more substance, album eras were longer, and it was less "in the moment." This period in pop (focus on electronic/dance party music) is a bit monotonous. It's moments when a song like "We Are Young" or "Pumped Up Kicks" comes out of the blue and does extremely well in such a climate that's entirely one-track minded. Stanning aside, Gaga brought back the momentous joy that surrounded a new video during The Fame/Monster eras. We need more of these individuals to change the system up.
