In reality what? Madonna is the best selling female singer of all times. Don't try it.

Well, Avril was the one founded as the anti-Britney. She's in the mid 80s, where she belongs.
Pink was more a hip-pop/R&B version of Fiona Apple.
Christina was more a younger, blonder Whitney. That's what the record companies set out to position them as.

This is Houston's screen debut, and she is at home in the role; she photographs wonderfully, and has a warm smile, and yet is able to suggest selfish and egotistical dimensions in the character.
|
But I was talking more about commercial success. Desperately Seeking Susan did $27M. The Bodyguard did over $400M. That's just jaw-dropping. This is in 1992 dollars. This is for an R-rated romantic thriller, not a comic book or action movie. You can't ignore that when talking about Whitney's career and focus solely on record sales.
Waiting To Exhale was also a major hit and helped Hollywood sit up and take notice of the fact that there's a huge female African American audience to tap into. Not a very good movie, but an important one.

Not Whitney.
Not Mariah Carey.
Not Falling Into You.
Not Baby One More Time.
Not even 21.
NOTHING. It's the (second) most successful hits compilation ever.

I thought Music Box sold more than TIC?

I'll try it again. Her post-80s sales are dismal. 2.3 million? 1.8 million? 677,000?
Whitney and Mariah outsold Madonna's ass over and over again.

I was steaming about that top ten until I read this post and literally laughed out loud. Thank you for putting it all into perspective for me, Ace. Ain't nothing left to do with this hot mess countdown except realize that it was probably the best news Pink and Christina have gotten all year and be free of it...

To be honest this whole list is such a joke that nobody would breakdown over it. Adele, Lady Gaga, and the rest of the Top 10 are not above Britney in any way or form and they know it.

No, Titanic isn't even included in her total album sales (even though we know it was ha song that sold it and that would put her above Madge in total album sales), and if it was included it would only be her third biggest album.
Only female artist with multiple 30m+ albums.
|
STAN for Celine. Never lifted a pen once and beat out everybody but Madge.
EDIT: And let's not forget even Britney has sung live more times in her career.

Soundscan didn't start tracking until after TIC had already been in release and selling for 5 months.
