I'm pretty sure it's the only album of the millennium that has been the most-acclaimed album of the year and won the award. Probably one of the few ever to. Flat critical acclaim is rarely what wins that award, which is what made it surprising.
It also doesn't help the fact that the Grammy Awards didn't even bother to nominate Funeral, which is generally regarded as the best or one of the best albums of the millennium. They hardly had a history to make it less surprising.
