Why is that a statement? Having celebrity fans doesn't make one iconic. Demi Lovata (and Selena to an extent) are HUGE Kim Kardashian fans as well.. Doesn't make Kim iconic.
It's clear she's influenced them all musically at some point in their careers. Especially when pop/rock was at its peak.
That she hasn't done anything to earn such a title? Her most prominent impact on culture was being the first winner of American Idol. All she does now is put out mediocre albums. She doesn't even want to be a star, so how can she ever be iconic?

Not wanting to be a star doesn't mean you aren't iconic sis. At the end of the day, she is a star. The fact that she doesn't actively try to be "famous" actually makes her star quality more impressive.
No, Kelly Clarkson is not necessarily iconic in the sense you are using, but then again neither is Rihanna, Britney Spears, Adele, or any other.
However, I will make the distinction that Kelly Clarkson (well, her namesake at least) is absolutely associated with the United States and its ideals, patriotism, etc. People want to like her because she's one of those all-American individuals, and so to that extent she is slightly "iconic", if you will, but I wouldn't rank her by any means with baseball and apple pie. Nonetheless, I'd argue more people in the US know her name than "Rihanna", for example (no shade intended).
