LMFAO! @ Janet not being noticed much as a pop legend.
Oh sweetie, don't let these fools, fool you. In the 80's through the earl 00's. Janet was considered a pop goddess, she was once called THE QUEEN OF POP, during the time when Madonna and Whitney had also been on the rise.
Her fame doesn't go unnoticed, her fame is underwhelmed due to the fact that most of the users on here are under the age of 20. Janet wasn't the force she was in the 80's and 90's as she was in the 00's due to the superbowl.
She was on the rise the earlier half of the 21st century. She was THE FIRST female superstar ever, even before Madonna to have 3 number 1 singles in 3 different decades. I'm sure these girls all remember All For You, Doesn't Really Matter, and Someone to Call My Lover. All big hits in the 00's. Just those hits are now over 10 years old.
And don't let them sit here and let you call her local. She has many global number 1 hits. TOGETHER AGAIN, ALL FOR YOU, THATS THE WAY LOVE GOES, RHYTHM NATION, LOVE WOULD NEVER DO, ETC. ETC. And she used to tour and sell out arenas as far as Israel, Indonesia, and Asia. She is not local one bit, she just hasn't been big in europe since the last time she had toured there until recently was 1998. As far as Asia and Australia she has still slayed there, even after the superbowl, they love her there.
Janet just the last 8 years of her career didn't stay consistent with her legacy and so to those UNDER 20(Which is majority of the users who post all the time here) have fell off. But trust if you were around the late 80's, 90's or early 00's, you would of considered her up there with the pop legends. She was first to receive awards like MTV ICON, Vanguard awards, World Music Awards Acheivement Awards etc. etc. As well as being the highest paid female artist of all time with her 80 million dollar record deal. Janet is a force, and trust that the anticipation is building for her return. She is still very much a staple in the pop music world.

Truly, a whole generation (or two) don't know any of her music, and either don't know her or her music. If they know her, it's because of the Super Bowl or for being someone's baby sister.
I know, it sickens me too. But Janet was only number ONE in Black America.
It could be worse. You could be in love with the Queen of UK-AUS Pop who never gets any recognition anywhere.

I guess maybe it's just the household I grew up in (suburban white family), but I never really heard much about Janet growing up... in fact, if not for her Super Bowl scandal I don't think I'd really know anything about her. In my house, it was always Michael, Madonna (from my mom hahaha), the Beatles, and Elvis... I guess that's why I consider those the big ones. Prince is not even on my radar, and I don't agree with people really listing him because he doesn't have such a strong impact nowadays... maybe when he dies he'll come back.

I'm being blatently honest here and i have never heard one of Janets songs on radio or seen one of her videos on tv. The only reason i had heard of her before atrl was 1) Mjs sister 2) The Superbowl.
I really doubt most people my age in the Uk could even name ONE of her songs.

Whitney's legacy in the 90s >>>>>>>>
Legendary.
Lauryn Hill can die tomorrow and still be seen as a legend because of her game changing album "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill". She doesn't need to outsell Adele or Beyoncé to get that title.

Girl...
But I guess... I don't have to prove when the footprints are already there.

It doesn't matter what "ERA" an artist is from. A legend is a legend. The stance these artists. ALL of the artists have made on music is enough to make them legends, the sales is just the perks and fluff. Any1 can be an icon or have something iconic. They are more than that. Like Barney is an icon, do we put Cher on the same level as Barney. He was a big public figure, right? Joni Mitchell changed music for women and Madonna and Janet changed what a female entertainer should be and could be.
the woman has a BILLBOARD in Times Square with the big ass caption "WHAT MAKES A LEGEND MOST?" It's there everyday. It's done.

I understand what you're saying.
Obviously i grew up in the late 80s and 90s so Janet will always be incredibly important to me.
I was just trying to give Drunk some CONTEXT as to why she's not mentioned in the same light as others.
Others were ignorant, but I believe I was fairly deadon.

The other reason is most of them are young and only reference Madonna because of the constant comparisons to Britney or Lady Gaga.

I don't use her and neither does the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame.
She's had three years and she's never even popped up on the ballot.

Yea I think u would have to be IN THAT MOMENT to understand why she's a legend. Looking back from 2012, u probably wouldn't see it, but if u were growing up to her or w/e u would agree that she's a legend. I was too young, but YOUTUBE, and google helps lol

Sales do not define what makes someone a legend. Madonna will never sell as much as Michael, the Beatles, or the rolling stones, so does that make her impact less influential? No.
Janet is LEGEND, not just because of her sales, but because of her impact in pop and her influcne and in the music world is seen as a staple in pop. DEAL.

Sats was mostly dead-on, but he shouldn't generalize that much. I'm black and I grew up with equal amounts of Janet AND Madonna. Hell, Ray of Light was the first CD I ever purchased! But janet. was the first CD I ever owned - until it was confiscated by my oldest sister for being too "mature" for a seven year old.
There was also a lot of Whitney.

I don't think she's engrained deep enough in pop culture to hold that title.
