I think the reason why Marry The Night is underperforming, and perhaps why most of the singles from Born This Way have underperformed is because the songs on Born This Way, while they are some of my favorite songs ever, lack the HUGE catchy hooks that make them irresistible to mainstream audiences. Gaga's biggest hits like Poker Face and Bad Romance are layered with hooks. From the fresh, futuristic electronic production to the "muh muh muh muh" and "rah rah rah" hooks and the "oh oh oh ohhh"s it's virtually impossible not to get these songs stuck in your head. Even Gaga's other big, but lesser, hits like Alejandro or Paparazzi have clear and big hooks and crisp production that make them accessible to mainstream audiences. And virtually none of her hits have particularly preachy or controversial lyrics that would alienate large parts of the population. Marry The Night's chorus, while I love it, is not nearly as catchy as Bad Romance's or most of Gaga's other songs from TF or TFM. The "muh muh muh marry" post-chorus is also only a very weak hook, as it is virtually monotonus. Don't get me wrong, Marry The Night is possibly my favorite Gaga song ever, but it's lack of huge hooks make it even more difficult to smash on the charts when Gaga has been already struggling to do that this whole era. Songs like Born This Way and The Edge of Glory were very successful because they have clear hooks (even though both had their respective issues-Born This Way's production was overwrought and the whole Madonna controversy...TEOG had a lackluster video and suffered from the previous two singles' issues). Virtually every song this era has had its issues, and with each passing single Gaga's image and general reception from the public has grown weaker. I'm not trying to be dramatic or depress all of you; I think Gaga just needs to take a short break, maybe even a long break if she can bring herself to do so, and go into the studio, rest her mind, and make music that is both true to her artistry and completely accessible and likable to mainstream audiences. I think The Fame Monster was nearly flawless at doing that. Cleaning up her image, as I think she's been sort of trying to do as of late, wouldn't hurt either. And I don't mean changing herself; I just mean not having facial implants and not wearing a fake pregnant belly and not living in an egg/vessel. She can still be edgy and unique without completely alienating huge parts of her audience; some of her outfits/performances are just asking for insults. Many of her haters deem her as either (a) ugly, (b) an attention *****, and/or (c) weird; unfortunately, Gaga does not have the advantage of being objectively pretty or "hot" like some of her pop competitors, but she can certainly look gorgeous while maintaining her freaky image (ala the Bad Romance video). The sad truth is that a sexy woman can be as strange and weird as she wants as long as she's still sexy; but that woman looks ugly than much of the general public just rejects her. I love Gaga, but putting prosthetic horns in her face when she is already considered somewhat average looking just makes her image absolutely horrible. And I understand her looks have gotten much better since then; she just needs to pair this with catchy, still artistic music and regain her success. She has the musical talent and I'm sure she's intelligent enough to know this. I'm just hoping her ego does not prevent her from seeing she really needs to focus and play her cards right; it's not the end of the world (as some monsters make it out to be), but the coming months for her need to really be on point if she wants to remain a superstar. ////END OF RANT
PS-why does Fernando Garibay insist on having echoing throughout all of his productions? It makes his end products noisier than they have to be and make them sound much less crisp...it contribute to the whole criticism that BTW is overproduced.
