Volume is not always a good thing. A good writer is able to put forward the same point as a bad writer in a far more succinct manner thus making the point far clearer.
Conciseness is a really hard, and highly respected, attribute of an excellent writer.
But let's not act like the point of all writing is to put points across succinctly. I can think of more than few authors who commanded the respect of the critical world by flushing everything out endlessly.
