That isn't hardly "leeching" off of Britney considering Madonna's tours always sell well. I don't see that Madonna quote as shade against Britney...she's just saying that she hopes Britney can live up to her stature (which she kinda did).

Also, if it's from July 1998...was Britney even popular then? The Baby One More Time video wasn't even filmed until August 1998 and probably didn't premiere until the fall of 1998, I doubt Madonna would've issued a statement on a star that small at the time.

She along with other pop acts that emerged from 1997 were heckled by several Rock and Hip Hop artists for their similar music, subjective talent and being seemingly manufactured (most infamously by Eminem). It was not okay to like Britney. Lust for her, sure. But genuinely like her? Not at all.

There will always be haters who abhor pop music and it's commercialism. That doesn't mean that people don't like or love the artists and their music. For instance there most certainly were people who loved Madonna even when she was seen as being a puppet with a voice that was "like Minnie Mouse" on helium. I didn't say everyone loved Britney back then, I said that there were a large portion of the general public who loved her without abandon and without guilt and that's true.

I agree. I don't see it as shade either. It actually sounds supportive in a way. Britney is like the only pop star Madonna likes.

And seeing her overcome that and now live a happy life with her fiance and children has made her all the more loved. We're not talking about 7/8 years ago.

Honestly this. Britney and GaGa have bigger fanbases, but when it comes to the average teenager, they would definitely pick Rihanna & Katy over the other two.

OT: I think negative news is more in the news than positive news (Britneys engagement). My opinion is that the hype about Britney 7/8 years ago was (femme) fatal for her image.

She was basically saying that there's more and deeper to me than a sexy take-my-clothes-off image. And Britney didn't live up to Madonna in any shape or form.

People magazine lists it as July of 1998, perhaps its a typo for 1999.
