The album as a whole doesn't really feel darker, just heavier in production, and a lot of the songs are empowering with the exception of (Bloody Mary)

I know what you mean. Usually self-empowering songs/albums are very light, carefree, happy, and pure pop-ish. I think with Born This Way Gaga really wanted to explore all aspects, both dark and light about wanting to be who you are and, as she said, the album is about "what makes us afraid and keeps us up at night"...It's about fighting your insecurities and believing in yourself despite "life's disabilities" (be it race, sexual orientation, class, or something as simple as feeling not good enough). Gaga's been through it personally and virtually all the songs speak to those fears and empower her fans. The hooks are anthemic and very big/epic in nature and some are not really pure pop. Gaga's allusions to suicide ("I won't give up on my life"), crying, praying speak to her struggles, but the songs also have great empowering parts (usually the chorus). The album as a whole is very empowering and I think the "darkness" in her image is more a "weirdness" that Gaga wants to embody as someone who knows what it's like to feel like a freak. She wears crazy outfits and prosthetics to make herself look MORE like a freak because people look up to her and will be inspired by her bravery to express herself freely. Gaga doesn't give a **** what people think of how she dresses. It's her body and she can dress herself however she wants to, and she wants her fans to feel the same way. This was especially true when the album first came out. Born This Way the song is all about embracing yourself and not being afraid of who you are, and the photoshoot/outfits during that time reflect that. Obviously Gaga has toned that down a bit recently with Marry The Night, but the song is self-empowering in a slightly different way.
