Does that only apply to those that migrate here, and then leave? Or born-citizens as well?

It applies to all citizens, naturalised or "native". Including children who just happened to be born in the US but didn't actually grow up there.

The US has ****ing horrible foreign policy, and silly immigration laws.
It's because of ignorant fools who think that all immigrants need to speak English, throw out all of their cultural traditions, and basically assimilate into a fat lazy society.
Instead, they take jobs by taking less money, and the Americans who can't find jobs get pissed because they're not willing to work for lower than $20 an hour because they need their UFC and their players, and when a Mexican worker will go it at $6 an hour just so they can send money back home, they get pissed that people are willing to actually work their asses off, so they start shrieking about how evil it is.
Look, you need to work. Sometimes for less than you'd like. If you don't want to, fine. There will be 40 people willing to work that hard instead.
EDIT: Just saw Katie's post. I'm just using Mexicans as an example because it's easiest for them to immigrate there.

I wasn't assuming anything. I was honestly asking what the main reasons are for people being illegal in the US. I know about zero on the topic, so I figured I'd ask.

Illegal immigrants don't hop the border because they want to be criminals, they do it because it's not that easy to get into the country the "right" way. If you try to pass through the border patrol, they haul your ass right back to Mexico and dump you in the middle of the nearest city.

You should all watch the 2010 film "Monsters"
It was made on an estimated budget of $15,000 pre-effects, and $200,000 after effects.
It's like District-9, but instead of apartheid it uses another not-so-subtle allegory, but for illegal immigrants from Mexico

I did not know this, and I'm born and raised in the US
Ugh, I did not agree to that. I hate when people are born into things like this.

Ok, now all this makes perfect sense. And like I said above, I forgot about the English requirement.

Oh, and btw you are racist to pigeonhole all illegal immigrants as criminals, and saying that you hate all illegal immigrants because of the actions of very few.

It's next to impossible for Mexcians to get a greencard NOW, because they burned their bridge by having so many of their citizens come here illegally to begin with. Why should America be giving top priority when most of their citizens don't even come here legally to begin with?
The U.S. has great immigration and foreign policies, which is exactly why EVERYONE wants to come to America. I don't even think people realize that this is one of the ONLY country's where you can actually make a better life for yourself That's why they call it the "American Dream".
We're not the #1 world superpower for no reason.

You do realize that living in America illegally IS a federal crime in itself? So yes, that would make everyone who lives here without a visa a criminal according to the law. And if you're caught, you're deported accordingly.

Not true at all. A job is a job. Do you know how many people are out there complaining about illegals taking jobs? And trust me, in this economy, people are almost looking to find ANYTHING that will pay them. lol. Especially the lower class? Lower class Americans are losing their jobs to Non-American citizens? Something isn't right there.
We're not ever going to fix our economy if we're paying Mexico's citizens what our citizens should be having in their own wallets.

Agree that America is definitely digging itself deeper and deeper into enormous debt. There's nothing we can do to control Mexico's problems as a country.
North right?
I don't think your last point is true. I don't think Americans are willing to work in the fields picking fruits (such as grapes) for a profit. Those workers work extremely long hours in miserable conditions and are most likely under payed by their employers. No American that I know would ever take a job like that.

Even where I live (a poor area), I wouldn't be able to find a white man who would work for well under minimum wage like most illegal immigrants happily do. Even though we're in a hole right now, people still want to be paid well.
"Lower class Americans are losing their jobs to Non-American citizens?" That's one of the biggest lies right wing media tries to push on us. Nearly every single tax-paying job requires a background check and illegal immigrants don't bother with those because they don't have backgrounds and/or social security numbers. They are not taking anyone's job, they are doing the jobs no one wants.

Now we're getting into wordplay here...illegal =/= criminal?
But I still think the concept is crazy. Who are we to call immigrants illegal? Have a basic registration process and get them started with taxed income. No jumping through hoops, no crazy requirements.

What you're saying is quite ignorant. There shouldn't be a burned bridge, because it's the United States' fault that they had to come illegally. Mexican citizens didn't decide to skip green card applications one day for fun, those kinds of rules have been in effect longer than that. And if you think that allowing someone to immigrate is "top priority", then I just can't.
Oh my god these last two paragraphs I can't even reply to you I'll just report you for being ignorant.
You're clearly a victim of propaganda, and this is coming from someone who is semi right-wing.
Actually, I'll just say this: People dont come to America for the abysmal foreign and immigration policies. They come here because you're an ECONOMIC superpower. Don't forget that.

If you want to get technical, they're criminals, but not because they want to be. They're labeled as criminals because of this country's ****ed up immigration policy. If you want to get super technical, we're all ****ing criminals because we've all broken the law before.
I agree 100% with your last part!

I wish Canada had somewhat stronger immigration laws. Last year, they just let 500+ illegal immigrants knowly walk-right into the country provided them with free food + clothing and shelter. All paid for via the taxpayers.. (they said it was like $15,000 per person.) What bothered me was there are homeless Canadians who could have been given that food + clothing and shelter.
You know what, I think I'm gonna become a citizen of a different country, then sail illegally into Canada to reap up these benefits

No, current US immigration policy is poor. That's why it needs reform. If it were so great, then you wouldn't have so many illegal immigrants.

Yes.
And poverty is on the RISE, in America. I can't speak for anyone on ATRL. We have internet, most of us probably live in homes with heating during the Winter and food in the fridge. Nearly 20% of America is under the poverty line and when you're a man with a family to feed, you're not going to be a diva and be afraid to get down and dirty. There were poor Americans working long hours in miserable conditions before, so their shouldn't be any reason why they should have a spot now when they need them.
So many Americans are asking why there aren't enough jobs and why America is losing its economy to China. Not saying this is totally to be blamed on illegal immigration, but is it a big factor? Oh hell yes. And just wait another decade when we REALLY start seeing the effects if its not handled.
