Who in the world said Paula dominated the 90s? Please read before posting.
You put her in the 90s "trinity" with Janet and Madonna.

Precisely. She had one successful album which lasted her a few years in the late 80s, then faded more with each day thereafter. Her impact is null. I can't at these gerls thinking she's some living legend.

Actually what Lately 1814 says is correct, she was bigger than Madonna at some point, you had to live as a teenager or adult during those years to understand.
Thank god, these kids think they know about pop culture and they dont know a thing. What I hate though is that this pointless discussion is undermining what was important about this thread: the brilliance of her performances in the OP.
Most of them don't know much about artists before 1995, but it's to be expected. Paula isn't a legend, or an icon for that matter, but she did do some things that helped shape the landscape of pop during her time.
Um, but no one's denying her huge success or what she had during her short-lived reign. But I just don't see how she paved the way for or had much influence on today's pop stars. Madonna, Janet, Whitney and Mariah are undeniable.

Oh don't give me that "you're too young to understand" BS. I know Paula was huge for a good album era, but let's not overestimate her success and, most of all, impact to the point that we're putting her among such legends as Janet Jackson and Madonna.

Thats because you dont care about reading the complete thread.

I read all of it, and my point stands. Paula was huge for a short period of time, but her influence is small and her impact is greatly exaggerated.

Exactly. It has nothing to do with being "too young to understand" anything. I know more about **** pre-90s than a lot of people on this board.
Paula came in hard and fast, and after each album her success and spotlight slowly decreased. Was she powerful at her peak? Certainly. But after that, she kept losing it.

If you read carefully the OP this thread is talking about her brilliance during her peak.
Does anyone really bring up Paula Abdul as an influence, though? She just seems like the one woman who bickers back and forth with Simon on AI and X-Factor.
To me, she was to Madonna and Janet what Toni was to Whitney and Mariah - they had the success, awards and popularity to compete with those other girls, but never had enough impact to be considered anything more than successful pop/R&B stars of their time periods.
I was tossing up between that and the family guy video.
Seriously though I think its likely she had some lasting influence but I wouldn't say she paved the way for new popstars, Madonna paved the way, Janet paved the way, Dianna Ross paved the way etc. icons paved the way. Paula was a pop star who was big in the day but now she's that crazy drunk lady who flirt fights with Simon and gives absoloutely useless advice on reality TV.
I think in 20 years time Rihanna and Katy Perry (who I love) will be seen as this too, big in the day but in the overall scheme of things not seen as iconic or influential (I'd love to be proven wrong though).

She not only helped Janet launch her own career, and influenced Britney and Christina, even Brian Friedman who has shaped a lot of todays current's (Beyonce, Britney, Janet, etc) technique and dance style, was influenced by her, being Paula one of the reasons he first wanted to become a choreographer.
No, it's valid if you understood the point I was trying to make...but instead you get offended and let it fly over your head. If you want to make this a Paula Abdul appreciation thread do that, but let's not try to snatch anyone who has made valid points about Paula's so-called influence on today's pop world. It's nearly nonexistent, especially compared to some of the artists she competed against in the past.
