Does anyone really bring up Paula Abdul as an influence, though? She just seems like the one woman who bickers back and forth with Simon on AI and X-Factor.
To me, she was to Madonna and Janet what Toni was to Whitney and Mariah - they had the success, awards and popularity to compete with those other girls, but never had enough impact to be considered anything more than successful pop/R&B stars of their time periods.
I think Britney may have brought up Paula a few times
Except Toni had a lot more extended success and relevancy than Paula did. She was washed up after 1991.
Someone actually enjoys that bowel movement of a song?!
Please, DJ, don't say it's the last call
Cause I know what that means and I don't want you to play no slow songs
I'm still building the nerve to talk to that guy
So play another song and make it right
I've always liked Paula. Albeit, she isn't my favorite out of the 80s/early 90s female artists bunch (Madonna, Janet, Mariah, etc), but she was still extremely talented. It's a shame that people nowadays only know her from American Idol and her prescription drug addiction. She has some true gems in her discography.
Paula had 6 #1 Billboard Hits, she was a worldwide megastar, I grew up in both Mexico and Spain and she was HUGE, people did not know Toni that much outside of the US, even if most do know Unbreak my Heart. And Paula did influence Britney and Christina, read my earlier posts.
And besides by those two, she is never brought up anyone else. People only recognize her for "Straight Up" and she was overshadowed before the mid-90s, so I still stand by my point.

I think pop music in general lost a lot when her career was cut short, she was doing pretty creative and innovative videos and choreographies.

This was a pop culture smash at the time and it's still brought.
It's true she was overshadowed, her time in the spotlight was 1989-1991 (during these 3 years she had her 6 #1 hits).
