Oh for god sakes, Madonna was still the Queen of Pop, And no they weren't, Erotica and Bedtime Stories sold millions, yes Erotica did sell less than she was accustomed to, but that was due to all the sexual content and the media backlash. Bedtime Stories was the album from were one of the biggest hits of her career was sprung: Take a Bow. Anyway this thread is about Ms. Abdul.

Does anyone really bring up Paula Abdul as an influence, though? She just seems like the one woman who bickers back and forth with Simon on AI and X-Factor.
To me, she was to Madonna and Janet what Toni was to Whitney and Mariah - they had the success, awards and popularity to compete with those other girls, but never had enough impact to be considered anything more than successful pop/R&B stars of their time periods.

Paula Abdul was known worldwide, Toni was mainly recognized in the US, Paula Abdul had 6 number one billboard hits, Toni had 2, there is no point of comparison.

I think Paula had a genuine effect on Janet in terms of choreography (she was her choreography during Control) but Janet jacked whatever impact Paula would have had quite quickly. In terms of the 90's though it was all about the voices. Mariah, Whitney and Celine were at their peaks then in terms of popular music.

Mariah, Whitney, and Celine. Trinity of the 1990's. That can be proven.

There is no shade here. Paved the way for artists like Britney, I think that there is no one else that reminds me more of Paula's prime than Britney from her prime: Not the best singer, but an awesome performer. The "orgy" scene of Paula's Coldhearted video, recreated in a racier way in Britney's "Slave 4 u", etc..

Paula did not only influence Britney as I said in an earlier post, even Christina recognized her in her "What a Girl Wants" video, recording the video in a room similar to the one used for Paula's "Coldhearted" video. She said so in an interview, and she also payed hommage to madonna's vogue mtv performance in that video.

Let me rephrase it:
I'm talking about Paula compared to Janet and Madonna. Paula had all the success, awards, etc., to compete with Madonna and Janet, but she never made the impact or had the influence they had on today's pop stars. She faded by the end of the early '90s. I feel the same way about Toni. We all know she had success. We all know she won awards. We all know "Un-break My Heart." But her impact and influence are small compared to Whitney's and Mariah's.

Paula had 6 #1 Billboard Hits, she was a worldwide megastar, I grew up in both Mexico and Spain and she was HUGE, people did not know Toni that much outside of the US, even if most do know Unbreak my Heart. And Paula did influence Britney and Christina, read my earlier posts.
