Sis...ICONS set the bar
There is NO reason that a current and relevant so called "ICON" has never sold more than 250K in her first week. ESPECIALLY in a market nowadays where first week sales are so important.
She's the ONLY girl I know with massive debut singles and lukewarm album sales to match.
It boggles my mind.

Put a song next to each of those genres in your list that Rihanna has done. I dare you.

Raggamuffin? Fire featuring Spragga Benz.
Latin? Have a Nice Day.
Alternative? Perfect Day is technically alternative rock seeing as it's essentially a No Doubt song.

I think that's what's gonna kill Gaga

See - I'm a Gaga stan, but she is irrelevant to this topic so I won't mention her. So you should do the same.
But anyways, being a freak and selling sex, different but same obviously same goal in mind, so you really can't defend Rihanna in that instance.

there's so much more to being a icon than #1 singles. Katy Perry tied with Michael ****ing Jackson and consistently has #1 singles, is she a pop icon as well? let's keep it real here. The masses look to Rihanna for catchy pop songs and not much more than that. She isn't praised or known by the masses for her vocals, music videos & most certainly not her performances.
|
Katy's hits are only extremely massive in US and have decent WW success. Unlike Rihanna's whose Flops in the US go #1 in France for 5 weeks. Rihanna is more than her hits. Marc Jacobs has a bag & line of Umbrellas named after her when she was only 19. Phillip Lim was inspired by her and had all his models what the runway with Red hair. Anna Wintour even agreed. She covered vogue TWICE. Nicki Minaj, Demi Lovato, and Jessie J all named her as inspirations. Prince and George Michael both covered songs from her "flop" era Rated R. Bon Jovi called her " one of the Queens of Music" Kanye said she'son the most important thing to POP today's culture. And DEAD @ you trying make seems like being known for you're music is a bad thing. When she's a ****ing singer! Not my fault Rihanna can gain WW success and be noticed around the world without having to wear a Meat Dresses or having her period on stage..

But us is not even her native country and she has hit 250 K a week in the uk so your point is invalid

Yes, Beyonce is the best female performer alive, but it's not like Rihanna is totally talentless. She has it, she just need to work on it.
The only thing GaGa has over Rihanna is performing talent and energy. Rihanna needs to have more energy in her shows.
|
Yes she is overshadowed, the public prefers Gaga or Beyonce over Rihanna any day

"freak show" or not, Gaga kills every performance and always brings her A-game when she's performing. Rihanna has been out longer and has yet to deliver any iconic or highly memeroable performances.

Rihanna has gone all in on the Ibiza trend. Dance music of this sort, oriented around cathedral-size clubs and face-dissolving drugs, requires that the star providing vocals subjugate herself to the sound, allow it to steamroll over her and any of the subjectivities that, in a typical pop-song dynamic, draw us closer to her, make us care about her, and so on (which is one of the big reasons why we don’t care at all about Judith Pronk, the woman who sang on “Better Off Alone”). There is something Faustian about the transaction: Your voice will be inescapable, but it could be anyone’s.
|
So they even attributed her catchy voice to the type of music that's GIVEN to her? I mean they didn't even give her that? . I partially agree with the article but as a whole it's clearly written from a very biased point of view.

She was in the Middle East on a pilgrimage, and thousands came to see her. Sounds like Janet could be Jesus to me.

I love how just because Beyonce is in my avatar that's your comeback.
Not once have I called Beyonce an ICON in this thread.

Rihanna has never been more than an excellent product of her label. Everything about her is meticulously calculated - from riding the trends, roping in talented personnel to work with her, scheduling of her releases... It has also been a great deal of luck too because labels had tried ceaselessly to pull a Rihanna until the Rihanna happened and exemplified such efforts. There is no point debating the success she has achieved, facts are facts; but it is a stretch to attribute to her any artistic credibility and cultural impact that the likes of Mariah, Beyoncé, GaGa have made.
Simply ask this question: Would it have been a great loss if Rihanna had never happened at all? I know that the canon of pop music would feel inadequate if somehow the said major stars were wiped from our collective appreciation. But I wouldn't begrudge Rihanna's or Katy Perry's disappearance however much and unabashedly I enjoy their songs.

Loud first weeks sales worldwide:
1) 406,000
2) 300,000
3) 243,000
4) 278,000
5) 409,000
6) 512,000 (#1)
So, the US isn't Rihanna's strongest market. Wow. Big deal. She still has the whole world.
