Yeah I heard it frequently when I was younger. The lady at the bus ticket booth said it to me once when I showed up with no money to pay for my tokens.
Because we have a slightly diphthongized 'oo'-sound and to us that's what it sounds like.
I'm not so convinced of that. Most Americans that know I'm Canadian ask me why I say something that is neither the American "about" nor "a-boot", as if I'm supposed to say the latter
