Sometimes you have to go "too far" when getting the message out. Madonna and Janet have done it before on numerous occasions. And yes Britney was reckless herself, getting drunk and marrying a hometown friend in Vegas only to have the marriage annulled within 24 hours of the ceremony and rushing into another marriage with a dancer you barely knew for a year didn't help. Though Britney was dealing with a variety of personal struggles at the time with her parents divorcing, her aunt ailing sickness before she died, still coping with the fallout with Justin, and so on.

I disagree. Does she she really need to go to such extreme lengths with this contrived persona just to leave a lasting impression? People loved the Umbrella video, and that wasn't controversial. Her career and legacy shouldn't depend on things like that. Legends of the past didn't need it, so I don't understand where this notion comes from. Rihanna needs to show that she has the talent to back up this controversy; otherwise, all this shock value just looks desperate.
