I actually think the video had a variety of routes it could have taken, one being what you mentioned....going the "inspirational" route. Although, I think the general public are a little tired of "inspiring" songs/music videos. Firework, F*&^% Perfect, BTW, etc. It's time to give people a hard dose of reality and the state of our generation today, which was depicted in the video. Youngsters acting silly, indulging in dangerous activities, sex, immaturity, and so on.
They went with the route of how toxic their love was and you saw that through the events that played out on screen. The song is very much another "Love The Way You Lie" in a way if you really think about it. It's always cool to see a "not so happy ending" like most try to end movies or videos with because it's not very realistic in several cases.
I will say, I think Rihanna is approaching a wild and bit out of control stage. Almost reminding me of Britney in the ITZ/Chaotic days, where she just didn't give f*ck what people said and did whatever she wanted and was a bit of a badazz.
