Also, thank God that with iOS5, all future updates can be downloaded directly by the device without syncing it with iTunes anymore.

That happened to me too. You just have to be patient and it will sort itself out. It took me two hours to update, I had two more phones and an iPad to update. Not tonight.

Lemme tell you what I did:

Press shift while pressing Update. Click the file. Wait to see it if updates.

If not, back up your iPod, unplug iPod, close iTunes, restart computer, open iTunes, then connect your iPod, then press shift while pressing restore, and click on the iOS file download. It's going to restore it to factory settings but after it finally updates, you'll restore it from the backup you did before. Mind you it took me 20 to finally let the network get it to restore. It's going to tell you "iPod can't be restored because update server could not be contacted or is temporarily unavailable." Keep trying till you get it lol.
