People keep on saying this when her singles under perform but its just an excuse. LFN(TGIF) had no promo in the UK yet it is still top 3 on radio after weeks, meanwhile TEOG is slipping down the top 20 and only spent one week in the top 5. I know people will say "but Katie is unstoppable atm" but that hasn't been the case in the UK.

Because the song at #1 is dropping 1%+ an hour.
Anyways the video already did miracles, now we need the radio effect to take hold.

Mhmm, I'm waiting until it's added to radio before I say anything. As of right now, it's selling because of the video and the small amount of radio play it's getting, so #17 on iTunes is nothing to scoff at.

Yeah, if nothing else, I'm impressed with how far the video brought it, especially when she performed it like three times and it STILL struggled to even stay in the Top 100.

Katie is unstoppable in the US, but she's no force WW anymore.

I just don't see the public/radio embracing a song like You+I from Gaga.
The buying public views artists a certain way and it's hard to break out of that mold, unless the material with which you try to break out is really amazing.
Rihanna tried w/ CKB and bombed...now she's climbing up the charts w/ a song about getting wasted on the weekend.

I think I tend to agree. I mean, it's not like an artist can stay promoting in a single market every other week when they're supposed to be global.
The album/singles need to be able to stay afloat on their own for at least some period of time. I hope the Y&I video does things for her over there, cuz it's not looking too awesome if not. (Although eventually going 3x Platinum is nothing to sneeze at, of course.)

But Rihanna has had successful ballads.
CKB just wasn't good.

I didn't think the video would have an impact. I never really thought videos mattered, but I guess they do. Then again, a lot of people really like the song. Almost every non fan I know loves the song.

If you think about it, radio and the public seem to embracing it. Fans aren't the ones buying the song on iTunes, the public is. It's #17 because of the general public.

It depends, I think. The most important thing is whether people like the song you're trying to break out with, and that seems to be the case with Y&I.

Firstly, in the UK the album has sold 520k already which is very very good and the lead single is on 560k which is also excellent so there is no need for us to be worrying. BUT the chart runs for all the singles so far has been disappointing and people keep on saying its because shes not doing promo and "you need to do promo to be successful in the UK", which is utter rubbish.
TEOG is having massive success in Germany atm with no promo, explain that?

It's pretty good. IMO not good enough to help a popstar known for her wardrobe and dance music successfully transition into ballads. We'll see.

I strongly disagree.
People who aren't Gaga fans, or even casual Gaga fans, will love "You and I" not only because it stands out as far as the singles she's released are concerned, but also because of its relatable lyrics and honky tonky sound.
It's a typical love song, with high heel and Jesus Christ shout outs. It's perfect song for the female market, IMO.
Adult Gaga fans who aren't usually into her dance-pop will be in love with this song.
I truly believe that this could do wonders for her Born This Way era. If the song smashes and is a huge fall single, then I really believe that the album sales will see an increase just because of this single.
It's different and sets her apart from what's being played on the radio currently. People will hear the song and be like "Wait, this is a Lady Gaga song??"
Southern girls especially will LOVE this song to death.

The importance of a video varies from artist to artist/genre to genre, but I think in Gaga's case it's become very important. She's pretty much become known for her videos more than anything else.
Even my friends who don't like Gaga will still check for her videos and talk about them. I went to lunch with a friend yesterday who is always behind when it comes to pop music (especially videos), but Y&I came on the radio and she started talking about the video and asking me what I thought it meant.

She performed TEOG on the Germany's Next Top Model finale, which is one of the best forms of promo over there. I'm pleasantly surprised it's held up so well there for so long, though.

But I think Y&I is what people want from Gaga at this point in time. Even though a lot of people think she's a giant attention *****, they do know she's talented and they are the ones who are like, "Why can't she just put out a song that showcases her true talent?"

Yep but that performance was weeks before the song was even sent to radio there so I think its fair to say it had little impact on the songs success.

Gaga has kind of proven herself as a talented person who has more to offer than just catchy dance songs. The countless acoustic performances she does are one of the things that set her aside from the likes of Kesha, Rihanna, Katy etc.
I've seen nothing but love for You & I, particularly from people who don't usually like her music. It has the "Oh wow, is this really Gaga?" - factor.
