The legendary rock bands are broken up or aging and no longer command a fan-base that will empower their music in the popular scene. They may still command the highest tour revenues, but they are seemingly incapable of producing a major hit, regardless of their track record or respect. I'd say that Gaga is well-respected within the rock community in general. Regardless, Y&I will probably be the closest thing to a rock 'n' roll "hit" in several years.

Nah, the general public puts people in boxes. They're not going to sit there and analyze. It's easier that way.
The general view of Gaga is try-hard Madonna wannabe w/ tired attention-seeking antics and OK songs. She can't pull off a rock ballad.
It's not just her. The general view of Britney is white trash former teen idol whose many "comebacks" still haven't gotten rid of the stench of her scandals.
Adele is viewed as pure talent b/c she's fat and sits there doing nothing but singing her heart out.
