I know what you mean, but it needs to be done. They don't have to use real bullets. They can use rubber or plastic ones. They can fire blanks into the sky. Or even without guns, they can use tear gas.
I don't think there would be an uproar IMO, because (and yes, I don't live in London anymore, but I used to, for the majority of my life, and I still care deeply about my city/country) it seems to me that the people who were angry about the death of what's his name, Max or Mark or M something, are angry, possibly even angrier, at the people who are taking advantage of his death to loot, steal, arson, etc. I think they'd be in support of the police/army showing some balls. JMO.
That's a contradiction in its self
