'Harry Potter' Becomes Top-Grossing Franchise
On Wednesday, Harry Potter edged out Star Wars to become the top-grossing franchise of all time. The eight Potter movies have accumulated $2.223 billion, compared to $2.218 billion for Star Wars. They're also the only two franchises to have crossed the $2 billion mark, though James Bond and Batman would join the party when adjusted for ticket price inflation.
Star Wars still trumps Potter in terms of estimated attendance, more than doubling the wizard wunderkind. It even maintains most of that margin when its re-releases are factored out.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 pulled in $12.27 million on Wednesday, down 20 percent from Tuesday. That ranked as the 13th highest-grossing non-opening Wednesday ever. The first Transformers holds the non-opening Wednesday record with $29.1 million, while The Dark Knight made $18.4 million with a 12 percent Tuesday-to-Wednesday drop at the same point. Deathly Hallows Part 1, Goblet of Fire and Sorcerer's Stone all had higher grossing Wednesdays than Deathly Hallows Part 2, but each of those were buoyed by the Thanksgiving holiday.
With a $214.88 million tally, Deathly Hallows Part 2 slotted third among the top-grossing six-day openings, behind The Dark Knight's $222.15 million and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen's $214.93 million, but it's still the fastest-grossing Potter, topping Half-Blood Prince's $167.9 million six-day haul and ahead of any Twilight movie. Normalized for ticket price inflation, Deathly Hallows Part 2 would rank ninth on that chart.
Meanwhile, Harry Potter distributor Warner Bros. crossed the $1 billion mark for the year, marking the studio's 11th billion dollar year in a row. Currently, Warner ranks second to Paramount, but the studio was the top grosser of the past three years.

Discussion, Rotten Tomatoes and a Box office thread, it's a bit much.

You don't have to be a scrooge... This is the FINAL film. Let it have its many moments in the spotlight and don't come up in here dissing it for having multiple (well-deserved) threads. :tsp:

When I posted it the top 3 threads were HP, clearly now it's simmered down. I was thinking of how other movie threads were done, and forgot how big HP is. I wasn't at any point dissing it, and my comment wasn't meant to be taken seriously, Now Harry just clogging celebria up, come on now.

'Harry Potter' Franchise Crosses $7 Billion Mark at Worldwide Box Office
It also pushes Warner Bros.' 2011 domestic tally above $1 billion -- for a record 11 years in a row.
The Harry Potter film franchise continues to collect enough gold to rival the holdings in Gringott’s Wizarding Bank.
Warner Bros. announced Thursday that as Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 concludes its first week in theaters around the world, the eight-film series has crossed the $7 billion mark in total worldwide grosses.
The newest Potter film has earned $640.2 million worldwide: It has rung up $214.9 million domestically and an additional $425.3 million at the international box office, Warner Bros. Group president Jeff Robinov said.
Potter’s explosive opening also pushed Warners’ domestic box office take for 2011 over the $1 billion mark for an 11th consecutive year, an industry record.
“It is an extraordinary privilege for everyone at Warner Bros. to share in this piece of cinema history," Robinov said. "We are extremely grateful to the Harry Potter fans, who have remained loyal to the movies for more than a decade. We also want to congratulate the amazing roster of actors and filmmakers, whose artistry and talent is evident in every frame of every film. But special thanks must go to the woman whose incomparable imagination literally changed the world, Jo Rowling.”
As Warners' exec team, including domestic distribution president Dan Fellman and international distribution president Veronika Kwan-Rubinek, all took a collective bow, Sue Kroll, president of worldwide marketing, added: “Each film has inspired us creatively, and it has been exciting to watch the evolution through eight remarkable movies. It has truly been the movie event of a generation, as Harry Potter fans who were there from the beginning have been joined by new fans over the years, and their enthusiasm -- as well as our own -- has never waned.”
Even before the latest movie opened, the Potter franchise was already the highest-grossing franchise of all time, beating out both the Star Wars and James Bond movies, a status it has held since the sixth film, 2009’s Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.
Individually, the worldwide grosses for the previous films are: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, $974,755,371; Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, $878,979,634; Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, $796,688,549; Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, $896,911,078; Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, $939,885,929; Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, $934,416,487; and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1, $955,417,476.

I think that's a typo.
4,375
3,475
Movies never lose theaters during their first week, especially ones as big as this.
Seems like a second weekend of $47-49m is in store.

Yeah, I came to the same conclusion. Part 1 also didn't lose any screens in its first 3 weeks, but 3475 x $3,230 does equal $11,225,000. :scary: So either it isn't a typo and it did lose a big amount of screens, or they got all the numbers wrong. If it turns out to be a typo, and it did make $3,230 per screen, that means it grossed $14,131,250 on thursday.

A lot of BOM chart data is automated, so they report the total gross/theater count and the theater average will automatically be calculated based on that.
Either way, second best Fri-Thurs gross ever.

Hopefully they'll fix it soon, and that would be a 23% increase.
