I honestly think they will snub GaGa for some reason. After those snubs last year, I think the panel will past over her this year.
And Bart, the ladies who have dominated this year are Adele, Gaga, Jennifer Lopez, Katy, and Rihanna. Katy is out since she got her nomination. Jennifer Lopez ain't getting in. So, that leaves Adele, Gaga and Rihanna. Adele is in. No doubt in my mind. GaGa's album isn't holding up too well, it's not a critical juggernaut and there seems to be something missing from this era compared to TF(M). Rihanna could scoop in and get nominated, but I'm not sure. And yes, I know Beyonce is lurking, but like I said, I would like to see how her album performs in the next few months before I predict her.
Bruno Mars stands an excellent chance because in this world of pop females, he has continued to release hit after hit. And this is the same guy who got SEVEN nominations just last year. Bon Iver is the token alternative/rock nominee. They ALWAYS have those. The panel might snub a country, rap or R&B album, but never a rock/alternative album. No sir. Rap is dead, and Kanye has gotten nominations for each of his acclaimed albums. He will be the token rap star nominated, though I don't think he is safe by any means.
I'm calling it; Jason Aldean will get in. The best selling country album of 2011, a top 10 hit, etc. Pure Grammy bait. ROTY and SOTY are where the single artists and ladies will dominate.

Yeah, all the Country contenders have big minuses - Speak Now has been no Fearless in terms of sheer visibility, Krauss's album isn't big enough, there is probably Lady Antebellum fatigue, and Aldean's album seems to have all the same attributes as last year's Country choice (mediocre album, big hits), but nothing he has is as big as Need You Now was.
Can we talk about Alternative Album? I'm getting antsy.

Plus, MBDTF is honestly his least successful album yet. (808s and Heartbreaks might have sold less, but it produced TWO big hits.) His latest was dead by December, and never produced one Pop and/or international hit - a first for him. All that's keeping it alive are the reviews.
|
Oh, did you mean in terms of likelihood to get nominated? Then I completely see your point. I thought you were talking about quality—and I will defend MBDTF until the end.

If Rihanna gets in instead of GaGa, I am officially boycotting the Grammys. I love Rihanna and everything, and I have stanned for her from day one.
But if GaGa, with a ONE MILLION FIRST WEEK DEBUT and a smash single that spent SIX FLIPPING WEEKS at number one doesn't get nominated, Rihanna will not.
Or else hoez will be shot.

I've only started recently putting Gaga in my predictions, because it's unfathomable to me that only one female will be nominated in this category. Bey might get the nod over Gaga, but I'm not sure if her album will make enough of an impact to put her in consideration. Gaga's album has yet to stabilize, but I think the hype of the release itself will be enough to carry her. Last year I would've given Bruno the nod easy, but I'm not sure he has that "it" guy momentum right now.
Like Ace said I don't like Aldean's chances because he simply doesn't have the MASSIVE crossover appeal (Lady A, Taylor Swift) or the critical acclaim (Miranda Lambert). Maybe his momentum will pick up as the year goes on but I don't see him getting much attention outside of the country categories.

Aldean doesn't need a hit as big as "Need You Now." He is peaking at the right time... towards the end of eligibility. He has two hits: "Don't You Wanna Stay" and "Dirt Road Anthem." That's all he needs to contend. I think you guys are underestimating the males this year.

Can Sigh No More get nominated? Also, I think that Arctic Monkeys can get nominated with their album.
Is Bon Iver eligible for this category? I know like nothing about the Alternative genre at the Grammys.

2008:
Coldplay - Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends
Lil Wayne - Tha Carter III
Ne-Yo - Year Of The Gentleman
Robert Plant & Alison Krauss - Raising Sand
Radiohead - In Rainbows
2007:
Foo Fighters - Echoes, Silence, Patience And Grace
Vince Gill - These Days
Kanye West - Graduation
Amy Winehouse - Back To Black
Herbie Hancock - River: The Joni Letters
2006:
Gnarls Barkley - St. Elsewhere
John Mayer - Continuum
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Stadium Arcadium
Justin Timberlake - FutureSex / LoveSounds
Dixie Chicks - Taking The Long Way
2004:
Green Day - American Idiot
Alicia Keys - The Diary Of Alicia Keys
Usher - Confessions
Kanye West - The College Dropout
Ray Charles - Genius Loves Company
These are recent examples of only one woman or group of women being nominated for album of the year, and 2007 was dominated by females (Amy, Rihanna, Nelly, Fergie, so on and so forth). It's not unreasonable to think the males will fill up 4/5 spots in AOTY.

Probably the Grammys will snub Kanye's album, nominate 'Watch The Throne' and if it loses it will not look as 'schocking' as MBDTF losing; they will lose credibility by ignoring it when they announce the nominees on december but people will have already forgotten about it by the time of the ceremony.

Sigh No More was nominated for Rock Album last year. (Or Folk. One of the two)
I'm making two sets of predictions, in case Bon Iver and Fleet Foxes get pushed off to other categories.
Alternative Album (1)
James Blake, James Blake
Bjork, Biophilia
Bon Iver, Bon Iver
Fleet Foxes, Helplessness Blues
Radiohead, The King of Limbs
In this case, Bon Iver's winning.
If NOT
Alternative Album
Bjork, Biophilia
James Blake, James Blake
Death Cab for Cutie, Codes and Keys
My Morning Jacket, Circuital
Radiohead, The King of Limbs
Have no idea who wins in this scenario.

Im thinking Cee Lo will get an Album of the year nomination. the grammys love him and the Voice has really helped him become more mainstream and help the album continue selling and reach reach Gold. plus The Lady Killer was critically acclaimed.

This makes perfect sense to me. It would be an awesome set of nominees. Can we have it as AOTY line-up?

This could pull a Raising Sand. Remember how much love that got a few years ago?

After the "Bad Romance" snubs, nothing would surprise me, and I don't consider GaGa a "lock" at all. She was at the top of her game during the The Fame/The Fame Monster, so that's why she was able to get those two AOTY nominations. The buzz just doesn't seem there, and I can see the BRP passing her up. Does anyone remember how BR was hugely favored to be nominated for ROTY and SOTY but was snubbed in ROTY for four urban songs and a country song, and in SOTY, for stuff by Ray LaMontagne? Like I said, nothing will surprise me at all.

What about Wasting Light? Foo Fighters deserve at least 1 nom.

This wouldn't surprise me either. I think people keep looking at the same four or five names, but there are others lurking.

Re: Beyonce
"Best Thing I Never Had" makes a stronger contender in R&B Solo Performance that "1+1" or "Run The World". She has no business submitting in Pop, especially with "Rolling In The Deep" as a sole frontrunner.

BABY. You do know Coldplay's having that album out before October, right? With a second, more rocky single fronting it. It will be a COMPETITION.
Rock Album
Coldplay
Foo Fighters
Kings of Leon
Lucky to be nominated one
Lucky to be nominated two
COMPETITION. YES.

Urban radio's not touching BTINH - Pop is. She'll submit there, and will maybe even make it.
Pop Solo is going to be Adele, Bruno, and probably Gaga, Katy and Bey. Maybe a Paul Simon or a Pink can sneak in.
NO ONE ELSE (outside of some random instrumental) has a chance.
