Katy Perry came to town Thursday night with a stage production that looked good enough to eat.
It was the stuff of candy-coated fantasy, but she is a real winner who has become the current It Girl through her breakout success in photo shoots, videos and the studio, where all sorts of wonders can be worked.
The California Dreams Tour is her first major outing to prove that she can bring it live.
The fans did their part by packing Petersen Events Center, and you could say they got their money's worth in show-biz spectacle and pure, unadulterated Katy-ness.
The lights went out to a black and white movie of a penniless Katy in a dreary existence with a maniacal guardian dreaming of a fairy-tale life.
Then she went full color, making her entrance with "Teenage Dream" in candy swirl dress on an "Alice in Wonderland"-inspired stage decked out with swirly lollipops, candy-cane stairs and cotton candy.
Every song was a different Broadway-style production, starting with her dancing friend Slot on "Waking Up in Vegas" and moving on to circus mimes for "U R so Gay," feathers for the suggestive "Peacock" and a black cat-lady suit for the angry "Circle the Drain."
The sound from her band was big and impersonal, with the thumping bass and bass drum serving as the lead instruments.
The exceptions were her lovely and high-flying vocals on "Not Like the Movies" and "Thinking of You." Yes, Katy Perry can sing.
Thankfully, there was lots of time set aside for her playful "weirdness."
"You can come up, but you have to leave your shirt down there," she said to a fan named Louis, who was pretty ripped and came up to give her a kiss. Then she shooed him away saying that her husband (Russell Brand) was there and might come out to beat him up.
Ironically, it preceded a vampy "I Kissed a Girl" that also showed off her pipes.
Later, she launched into a long unplugged medley that included Rihanna's "Only Girl in the World," a chorus of "Black and Yellow" and a hilariously earnest cover of "Friday."
Plenty of hits were left for a rousing stretch run that had the building bouncing for "Hot & Cold," "Last Friday Night (TGIF)," "Firework" with fireworks and "California Gurls." She even threw in a dance party (complete with little purple-wigged girl) on "I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)."
"I only have two albums out, so you really shouldn't come to see me," she said sweetly. "You must have better things to do in Pittsburgh."
It may not have been the night's most musical happening, but it seemed the place to be.
Some of the cities had Robyn as opener. We had more of a mismatch with indie-rockers Marina and Her Diamonds, led by Marina Diamandis, a Welsh singer far more avant-garde than the headliner.
It's hard to imagine this Florence + the Machine-type band getting anywhere near Top 40 radio with a haunting New Wave sound informed by opera and German cabaret, but it was a good signal to the fans that there's something out there beyond bubble-gum pop.
