I'd say rihanna's music as of late is more adult material and controversial. Man Down, Rockstar, RudeBoy, Russian Roulette, Hard, S&M etc. Her music is very diverse though but not primarily pop candy for the youngins. Just my opinion

Yes... As much as Teenage Dream that is about sex, or I Kissed a Girl and Firework video with the Gay meanings or E.T. that's I-dont-even-know, or Thinking of You... yes childish songs that little kids listen to all the time! C'm on!
Invalid. Her music caters to a wide demographic. Primarily teens/college kids, with the "little kiddies" maybe putting a dent. She's selling 4-5 million per single for more than the elementary kids. As said above, if what you're claiming were true, Selena/Bieber/Hannah Montana, so forth would have as many single sales and success.

Couldnt it just be because katy the artist is big on the stations similar to Rihanna's song being spun on urban when they are really pop. Having to do nothing with the song itself.

It has nothing to do with her songs being exclusively pop songs. The fact that her songs successfully crossover to formats targeted to older audiences means that she has a percentage of those people buying her songs. It's a fairly simple concept.
Katy gets #1's on the adult formats. Quite effortlessly, I might say. A mere crossover artist doesn't rack up three consecutive (going on four) #1's on a WHOLE radio format targeted towards an adult or a more mature audience.
