BILLBOARD....
“Billboard looks for consumer intent when it comes to counting albums….. Billboard's role (is) being a market archivist and not a market activist… “
The article by Bill Werde on Billboard’s role in the music industry and their policies concerning album counts toward the Billboard 200 has caused quite a spark on the web. Based on their words we should be counting illegal downloads towards the chart since their main goal again is…
to be market archivist and they
look for consumer intent when it comes to counting albums.
If they TRULY want to be an archivist then I would say COUNT ILLEGAL DOWNLOADS with their Billboard 200 and you would really be counting the intent of consumers as well as a true accurate level of intent. The price of something plays second fiddle in this situation, so if the price is nothing, it would be fair to count them as well. And please don’t count to me with the argument that a price MUST be paid for a digital file does not have a "wholesale" price. Also big artists and I quote
“album sales ultimately represent a small slice of (their) revenue pie. What's most important… is that fans are familiar with and excited by new material. That way (they) can make money leveraging those fans create massive international hits -- not defined by sales, but by the number of fans that are familiar with and excited by the music.” And yes that's a
challenge that is presented to you by the market, and not by (your) charts. which as I recall…
“Here at Billlboard, we welcome the challenges,” so I am sure a company of your prestige will be able to find a system to accommodate this and be a market archivist to a better degree.
And really It’s a win-win situation for everyone
“The label and publishers get paid (whether they get paid in full that’s another case and not up to Billboard to decide again, you’re ARCHIVISTS not ACTIVISTS),
the artist gets his or her royalty (as well as a massive data stream or become a bigger “brand” that Billboard can measure with their new charts, the Social 50 and so on),
the retailer gets the marketing boost they wanted, and -- most importantly – (select) fans gets the deal of a lifetime” and even better, Billboard is the one who gets to record all of this.
Thank you for your time,
Alfie
